Subaru BRZ = Order only?

Well I got this e-mail from a fairly local Subaru salesmen that my family has done business with for years. Make with it what you like, there is no confirming that this applies to all Subaru dealership. For background information, this is a dealership that typically has several WRX's and an STI or two on their lot. Or an STi or two on their lot. Whatever it is this week.

My apologies for not posting this when I got it. Busy busy busy!

This is very possible, but so is the "take whatever comes" idea. I know most dealers don't keep WRXs and STIs sitting on the lot and make people order them. For the launch of this car I figured they would just ship a bunch in and make it order only once the mad rush ends. But if Subaru thinks it's really not gonna be a hot seller even from the beginning, they may do the order only stuff again.

I'm pretty sure BRZ won't on the lot in drones at any point. Maybe one at a time in the showroom. So the email seems accurate. The real question is what's the ETA for earliest cars made to order.

I got a feeling they wont have any to sit on the lot for more than a week, until 2014. So yeah I guess if you decided then I would go jump onto group buy or get yours ordered. I think this is alittle easier for the FRS side since the price doesn't change but I can see a fight and hunt coming for getting your hands on a BRZ. Good Luck, lol I'm not even sure if I can afford one XD

I got a similar e-mail yesterday from one of the dealers I've been in contact with.

So this basically contradicts the previous rumor of no pre orders.

If the "test car" shows up in May, I hope pre orders start well before as it usually takes 2 months from build to dealer.

Yeah, it's a bit confusing. The dealer is asking for a non-refundable deposit to place an order. I'm gonna get a price out of him before I do that. I'm guessing the first time we'll see a price will be posted on here, but maybe Subaru is finally releasing info to their dealers.

I honestly doubt it. Maybe until the end of summer of '12, but after that it might sit for quite some time. The car is geared toward middle-class, which is being squeezed left and right at the moment, and it's gonna go on for a while. I just don't see a broad-based persistent demand for the car at this point.

The dealer that I'm in contact with said he talked to his rep and will be able to order my BRZ in about 6 weeks (talked to him earlier this week). Granted I'm first on their list and want a very specific one. Hopefully it's true and if the build time does take the "average" 6-8 weeks, that puts delivery in May.

Interestingly, my deposit is refundable.

I already have a refundable deposit down with one dealer that I'm apparently fourth on the list with. He said orders wouldn't start until 6-8 before the delivery date. If this other dealer is legit and can give me a price I'll gladly jump ship.

Yeah, if they open up orders by the end of March, I'm not even sure that the 'lists' are gonna matter all that much, since actual production is likely to happen by color/trim/options combinations and not by the priority in some dealers' lists

If that's the case I'm fairly sure I'm gonna have the dealers play the
"decrease the price" game.

This is common practice when cars are in high demand. They keep one on the lot for test drives at all times, and then use it to secure orders. The Ct200H was this way for the first 6 months.
