What's your stance on buying new vs used? Would you have gotten an 86 used?

Been pretty much drilled in my brain since a kid that buying new is the dumbest thing ever and car dealers are the scum of the planet etc etc. Was wondering if in an alternate reality where this car came out 5 years ago and you are in the position of getting a new car... would you get a 2008 one for ~15k, or a brand new one assuming it's same gen? I guess we can also assume this car is hopefully pretty reliable in the long run!

I feel like I'd probably go used (clean carfaxs, no mods etc etc).

New. Two things daddy doesn't like are used cars and used women!! Ya never know how the previous owner treated her....er them. And I like to do my own breaking in.

I've said before there are many cars I would buy used. A few that come to mind are Camry, Corolla, Accord, Lexus, Buick, etc. There are several cars I would not buy used and two of them are the FR-S/BRZ. They're priced so that many young people can buy them without having to be wealthy. The younger the people the more they belong to the "drive it like you stole it" club and I would not want to take a chance on buying a used car that's been ridden hard and put away wet.

I would consider used. It all comes down to price and availability, and unfortunately, those two things are not in the FRS/BRZ favor. My guess right now, that a used FRS/BRZ in very good condition through a dealer will probably be very close to the price of a new one, especially if it comes certified with a 10yr/100k warranty. If you waited another year or two to buy, you might have more options.

Also keep in mind that Carfax is not always accurate (I have seen a lot of fraud with Carfax) and I always recommend having a trusted mechanic thoroughly inspect the vehicle inside and out. Especially with sports cars where the previous driver could have abused the vehicle or wrecked it.

yea, its not just sports cars. Especially after hurricane katrina, you can't really trust used cars just based off papers. certified (forgot acronym) mechanic.

Am curious if fr-s/brz's will be abused much. Like used miata's are pretty much all like new.

You'd think the most abused fr-s's are the ones already modded the shit out.

I bought my last car used. It was 2006 Audi A4 2.0T. It had 35000 miles when I purchased it and I took it to dealer to get any of the recalls and TSBs done.

It ran strong until 135,000 miles... torque converter went bad.

Buying used car is much cheaper and you may get some goodies out of it, but there is no 100% confidence that you'll get.

Brand new FR-S gave me a goooood confidence

It all depends on the previous owner and how they drove it. You really have no way of knowing outside of doing a very thorough test drive, and having a trusted mechanic look the car over. Also make sure there is a documentation trail on all service and maintenance done on the vehicle. If the vehicle looks clean, drives well, mechanic checks it out, and all the maintenance records are in order (and you run Carfax, Autocheck, etc) and the price is right, used is a good way to save some money.

I honestly think the Miata caters to an older demographic and of course there are many more out there.

Supply and demand dictate price

I have actually been looking for an older Miata to use as a track/weekend car that I can pay cash for, but have not found the one I want yet

haha yeah, the demand is surprisingly high for a rwd sporty car in 2013. Curious how much 2013 new would be when 2014 ones hit.

Knowing how I drive my car... there's not a chance in the world I'd buy an FR-S used.

pretty much with the majority here...i'd buy a lexus, camry, accord, used just knowing the previous owner is likely to be an older person who drives conservatively. I wouldn't go through the trouble of trying to find a used fr-s/brz, civic si, sti, evo, rsx, etc since the MAJORITY of the people who own them drive the crap out of them haha. there is also a rare chance that you find was that was a garage queen and babied throughout its life but like i said...rare. just my 2 cents.

Wouldn't pay more than $15k for a used one, and that would have to be pristine (that's quality RX7 money there). As thill stated, it all comes down to price and availability, if there were dozens in the area in good condition (no maawwds) with less than 60k miles and priced around $10k you'd have to be stupid to pay an extra $15-20k to get in the club.

But with that logic we'd all be driving $2,000 miatas.
