Bought a donor cluster, BRZ won't turn over.

I bought a donor gauge cluster on eBay to see if I could do some cluster inlays on without worrying about messing up MY cluster.

I swapped clusters and everything powers up fine, but it seems like the immobilizer is flashing and won't let the car start. (Cranks and then cuts out)

Do I have to reprogram my key to the new cluster? I would have thought that was stored in ecu, not the cluster itself.

I'm not sure if the cluster is from a limited, but I have a premium. I know that they have the 'security system' as a feature.

I apologize for taking such a long time to post this conversion. Anyway, It's all up and running now. I have successfully installed the GTS Cluster. The actual exchange took about 3.5 minutes. All you have to do is take 3 screws off, and pop the cowl, facia and cluster off. It is that EASY!

However, I smacked into a brick wall 3 weeks ago. The car would not start at all after I installed a brand new GTS cluster. SUBARU has taken car security to another level. The 86 is not a car thieves' dream car to steal. SUBARU has a clever car security system that is quite brilliant. The Key transponder, Immobiliser, ECU, and the Cluster constantly communicates with each other, even rescrambling new codes after 5 attempts to start the car illegally. Anyhow, buying a 2nd hand 86/BRZ cluster would not be worl $2 dollars actually. You can't use it at all! (that's what I felt 3 weeks ago).

However we have found solutions to remedy this BULLETPROOF SECURITY FROM SUBARU.

1. CANBUS REPROGRAMMING: I had to send my new cluster back to Japan, along with my spare transponder key, and a "snapshot" of the immobilizer sequence code scrambler (it's a code you can collect using a OBD cable with a toyota diagnostic tool software, relative to your VIN.). A SUBARU automotive locksmith in Japan actually had to do this for my brother-in-law who lives in Japan. Now, the best bit. They managed to clone my current GT cluster's identity and now it works seamlessly with my current immobilizer, key transponder, and ECU. Easier said than done.

2. IMMOBILIZER BYPASS: All the automotive locksmiths in Australia refused to do this for me. For a fact that it is against their ethos. But there is a particular immobilizer bypass module in England, BUT I will never divulge the information on this. This is a highly taboo subject. This module is what CAR THIEVES are after. If they get their hands on this module, all our 86's and BRZ's will be vulnerable to anybody who has a HAMMER, An IMpact Crew Driver, and they can take off with our precious car. I expect a lot of PM's inquiring this--SORRY, BUT I WILL NEVER BE ENTERTAINING YOUR PM's if you ask me how to get it and how it works.

3. SURGERY: Yes, surgery. You have to take your spare GTS cluster and take it apart. You take off the digital speed display, and the plastic sheet facia, and solder it to your existing GT Cluster (the blank part), and then sticking the GTS Plastic Sheet Panel over your GT face---Tada! (GTS CLUSTER)! However, you have to be careful because the soldering points are so fine, that you need a machine to do this job. MUCK it up and your EXISTING Cluster will BRICK itself! (Like an iPhone that will lock itself).

Warning: If you are not sure of what you are doing, it is not worth it. Bricking your Cluster/Immobilizer/ECU is an 8,000 dollar misadventure according to toyota. They will know if you fiddled around with the cluster (it is designed to do this!) they will have to replace your car's whole nervous system. Key transponder, Canbus System, Immobilizer, ECU and cluster.

Advantages: It is easier to judge your speed in school zones: THAT IS ALL. NO performance advantage whatsoever. I am only doing this out of interest and to ***** toyota when I trade my car in the future.

Disadvantages: TOO difficult to make it working. Cost me a lot of time and head scratching. It reminds you how slow the 86 is at the track's straight line. can be distracting in the middle of a corner. It did not make the car faster at all.

Trust me, LEAVE THE GT Cluster alone! It is charming as it is. Concentrate on your REV and Gear Matching, and you will be enjoying the car pure as it is. Or just stick one of these on: (Brilliant, Isn't it?)
