My FRS is already rusting!

Hey friends... So I was washing and waxing my beautiful whiteout FR-S yesterday and after I had finished I noticed that there was a pretty bad chip in my paint in the weirdest spot: on the top side of the trunk, right on the edge. Hard to explain, I'll try to get a picture later. The chip was down to bare metal and had rust on it!

Will the Toyota warranty cover this? I think I read they have a paint/rust coverage for a little bit. I've only had the car for 2 months...

No they won't cover a chip. If it was like that when you went to pick it up when new, that would be different. Your rust warranty covers "rust thru" which isn't likely to happen during the warranty period. Get some touch-up paint and take care of it. You will have many occasions to use it.

The warranty won't cover that but a body shop should be able to fix it pretty reasonably. Rust loves to spread so I wouldn't wait to long to get it looked at. Also a lot of people are complaining of rock chips on the trunk lid . I don't have any my hood takes the blunt of the rock chips on my car.

But it was caused by a rock chip which is damage and would have to be fixed by the insurance company

I dunno about you guys, but the fact that this car has any rust at all at such an early stage is a pretty big red flag for me. Is the paint really THAT thin that any chip will go right through and cause rusting?

Bare metal rusts. It has nothing to do with the paint or anything else; if you expose bare metal to water, it will rust.

Toyota's warranty only cover "rust through". That is extremely unlikely to happen during the warranty period. Take care of the chip yourself - it is to soon to have caused deep damage.

Corrosion will develop on any unpainted metal surfaces on our cars. There is nothing that can be done to prevent it aside from some touch up paint over the bare metal as soon as it happens. If the corrosion has already started it must be completely removed and painted as soon as possible to prevent it spreading further. Its a shame that the paint is really that thin on these cars. One of my first purchases was some touch up paint.

Ah, okay. Thanks for the advice. The paint on these cars must be super thin, I'm not sure how a rock chip even got on that part of the car. My hood and fenders are totally fine, too. Know a good place I can order some touch up paint? My dealer was awful so I can't go back there.

edit:

I bought some from here:
http://www.automotivetouchup.com/

apparently it is two stage or something so it can match my paint better. I bought stuff from them before for my Civic Si and it was a pretty good match. Still pretty lame that this car's paint is so thin.

I think I remember seeing another thread that used their paint. He had pictures and it matched pretty well. Just cant remember 100% if it was the same place.

I know it was a really awesome match on my Rallye Red Honda Civic Si, so hopefully it works out well again. It's in such an awkward spot though, hopefully I can do a decent job covering it up.

Please report back. I have a white BRZ and if this is a good match I may pick some up.

You might be referring to this recent thread: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17698 which indeed uses the same paint
