trailering the FRS long distance - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

Hey guys in a couple weeks I will be making the long haul move from Milwaukee, WI to Phoenix, AZ and the FRS will be on a U-haul flat bed.

I planned to put painters tape on the front sections of the car at least hood, front bumper, front half of fenders and mirrors.

Maybe roof and top of trunk to protect from any bird poop.

Now my questions are:

1. Will painters tape really do that good of job of protecting the paint from rock chips/bird poop?

2. How many rolls of tape do you think will be needed. I have 4 right now of the 1.88in x 60 yard rolls.

wow painters tape? why not just spend 30 bucks and get a car cover -- pretty much do the same. though you'll have to tie it down with some bunge cord or something.

Because I am guessing a $30 car cover is going to blow off before I even get to Illinois. lol

Well I could always return the tape. Whats the probability of rock chips happening being tailered?

the tape will help for small stones for sure, but you'll still have to be careful, if you kick up anything the size of a golf ball or god forbid a baseball and you'll be fixing paint or replacing the windshield.

bare minimum i would tape the front lights (headlights and turn signals) and the side mirrors. as far as the rest goes, depends how bored you are.

I would be afraid to do this. I think that the buffeting of the wind would cause the cover to be too abrasive on the paint over that long of a distance.

If I were you I would just buy a cover and tie it down good. Plus you never know where the bird crap will land on the car that could eat up the paint. So you have full protection.. As for rock chip just drive wise and look far ahead if you are behind them truck gravel haulers ..

Also don't stay behind cars/trucks that just merged the freeway/highway I'm sure they have gravel waiting to fly out due to increasing speed..give your self lots of space and you'll be good..

No car cover, that will just be like sand paper against the paint....fold mirrors in ...tape up headlights and you should be good. Re check all the tie down points at every gas stop.

Im moving away from wiscompton as well, done with this snow.....

There's a reason you never see trailered cars with covers on them

Honestly, I think you'll be ok without covering anything.

Agreed with everyone above about the car covers. At those speeds, it'll flap around and rub the paint like crazy. If you were really intense, i've seen people wrap packing foam around the front bumper and headlamps. Also tying something around the front windshield and up in through the passenger/driver side windows to totally wrap around the front windshield.
