About to order HKS header & front pipe. To go cat or no cat?
Hey guys,
Basically what the title says, I'm ready to order some more HKS exhaust to go with the catback I already have. They have a header & front pipe combo. Their front pipe gets rid of the second cat, but they have a choice of two headers, one with and one without cat. I know that you get more power without the cat and I'm not that worried about getting exhaust tested by 'you know who' but I am worried about the check engine light staying on all of the time. Is there any way of getting rid of the CEL? I do have ProECU tools if that helps? Or is the gains between with and without primary cat not really worth it for the CEL trouble? Cheers

From what I've read the difference in power is negligible between catted headers and non-catted. (Could be wrong though) The catted headers would be quieter but it depends what you're going for. If you do have a CEL the Ecutek software can clear that.

There is a post on here with a video from HKS showing the differences and the sounds..pretty good.
People have found some solutions to the CEL. I ordered a catted version (of the FA20Club) header. It's less raspy and you don't get any unwanted smells seeping up through the floor board. No cat will be louder but bring a little more power. For me I can give up 2whp for something a little quiter.

I believe High flow cat and non-cat's difference is just 2-3 whp.
Not sure how the non-cat works on these cars. I came from Audi and I used the high flow cat. People run o2 spacer (HFC or TESTPIPE) so the sensor gets correct measurement. It also eliminated CEL. |

Like others have stated I would give up a little power for a quieter ride. Also if someone finds that video please post it

I would buy a front pipe with a hfc and run catless header, instead of the other way around.

Cheers guys. I would love to see that video if anyone finds it but yeah, I think I'll go with catted. If the difference is only 2-3hp it doesn't seem worth it.
Thanks guys!

Does anyone have the HKS EL header + resonated front pipe combo (both un-catted) installed? Does the lack of cat for both cause black soot build up at the bumper / exhaust tips for NA car running without a tune?
Any comparative thoughts on the HKS resonated front pipe (catless) vs. stock front pipe? Thanks.
