Bad things you have done on the road
So to fill the time while we wait for the BRZ/86 I thought we could all share stories of the times where we acted totally irresponsible on the road. No I am not encouraging it in the slightest, but it's always interesting to hear stories of what people did and what sort of punishment they received from the police/courts.
I'll start. Back when I had my Skyline I was driving to a mates place and going through a round-a-bout. Exiting the round-a-bout I punched it, got the tail out and accelerated hard up to the speed limit. Like any idiot who thinks they got away with something I was smiling to myself for about 2 seconds before I heard sirens and saw flashing lights absolutely TEARING after me. My heart sank as I figured I may have just lost my licence. I pulled over, wound my window down and got my licence out ready. The cop was actually very nice. He didn't yell, just calmly asked WTF I was doing, I admitted I was being an idiot, he looked at my licence, breath tested me, then told me if he saw me do something like that again he would fine me and to go on my way. No fine! Turns out that was during the week where police were 'on strike' with issuing minor traffic fines. Yay! Anyway like I said I am not encouraging this sort of behaviour, and if you have never done anything bad on the road then you are awesome and have a lot of self control, or lack the stupid gene. But I still want to hear the stories. |

Ok I'll join in...
Stupidest thing I've done on the road? The first bike I had was a shitty Hyosung Gt250r. I regularly went on weekend rides with my mates who were on a Fireblade, a VFR800 and a ZX6R and I would always try my hardest to keep up or at least keep within reasonable distance. However I never did anything too stupid. Almost never... I got great enjoyment out of squeezing every last bit out of the Hyo in the straights and one day I decided that I'd give it everything to get those extra few km/hr to cross the next 'milestone'. I know I got to the long straight road that forms part of our regular cruise, tucked in and gave it everything. 20-odd seconds later I see my usual 'ok sit up and slow it down' marker but I look at the speedo, 'still a few more' I think to myself. I can now see the corner (which is a hard right that slopes down a fraction) and I'm trying to judge how late I can possible leave it. Next second I look up, the corner is about 70m closer that it needs to be, I sit up, brake as hard as I can, the front locks up for an instant but then re-grips. I'm about a second away from going off onto 10m of gravel and then bush. I hit the gravel doing about 70 and dive into the bush. Before I know it, Ive stopped, the bike is upright, I'm still on it and apart from a couple of scratches and a bush thats been rammed inside the fairing everything is ok. Lesson learned? If you're gonna buy a bike, at least buy a 600 so you can keep up with your mates. I'm only joking haha. Take it to the track! Safer, you learn faster and there aren't any trees on the side! As for police stories... well I've been let off alot more times than I've been booked

Mind you I low sided my bike at 110km/h the next session.... Thank god for leather. It wasn't until my 3rd track day that I crashed out.... I guess too much confidence will get you into trouble fast, track or road. |

I wasnt necessarily doing anything bad, but I was pulled over last night. The reason? I was turning out of a parking lot onto a deserted road, but the last few days we have had a big snowstorm so the roads are slippery.
I didnt think the road looked too slippery since I could see the asphalt, so I turned at the normal speed I would. The rear end of the car lost traction and went out. I kept up my acceleration in order to gain traction since that is what I heard is best (I have never driven on ice) and ended up getting up to 40 in a 25. After the sliding, I saw the lights way behind me (the cop was driving down the lane I was getting in, but was at least 300ft away when I slid). I was cited for negligent driving, which on the state website is a $250 fine, but the ticket says $550 for some reason. It may be the speed, but since he was driving way behind me in my lane there wouldnt be a way for him to radar me, would there? ![]() Im of course going to contest it in court, since its ridiculous being fined $550 for accidentally sliding a little bit on black ice. Ive never had this happen so I dont know what to say in court.

Stupidest thing I've ever done was fall asleep at the wheel and drive straight into a tree. That sucked.

CSSM, that sucks man. I guess from the cops point of view they just saw a car pull out and get sideways so they thought 'hoon'
If we are going to mention crap we got in trouble for that was BS, I once got an $88 fine for leaving my car running at the servo while I ducked in to pickup some milk. The stupid thing is that I SAW the cop there and thought "Ill just leave the car running, no ones going to steal it with a cop right there" I had no idea leaving your engine running for 5 minutes while you were less than 30m away from it was an offence. The cops reasoning? "It could fall into gear and run someone over" How a manual car facing a brick wall with the handbrake on is going to 'fall into gear' I heave no idea.... |

I mean, posting about how you outran the cops on the M4 the day after you did so might interest them somewhat, but a story about doing a burnout 2 years ago isn't going to cause any issues. |

Not really a bad thing - more unlucky - but after spending a good 5 years in the shed receiving a complete strip down and rebuild (including bare metal respray), I finally got to take my 1976 RA23 for its first drive.
Turned out my street, headed down the main road (80 zone) Didn't have the speedometer hooked up at that stage. Got done for 90 in an 80 zone (downhill) no further than 200m out of my street on the very first drive! |

Was at a stoplight. The light was taking forever to change. I fell asleep. That's pretty bad.

I drive around round-a-bouts on 3 wheels... that's about it for public roads.
