Smile My Awesome Deal! Took delivery today. Story time!

There is hope out there for those of you trying to get a good price on a new BRZ in Nor-cal. Here's my first-time-buyer story:

I reserved a BRZ Premium in February in San Jose, and was told that it would be delivered in June. I thought I was a patient person, but boy, was I wrong. I began vomiting BRZ conversation on my co-workers during the day and losing sleep at night. In my restlessness, I began watching all the California dealers like crazy, waiting for a BRZ to show its face.

In mid-March, a BRZ shipment was delivered to the dealers in the Bay Area and inventory grew faster than my allergies in spring. I quickly pulled on my haz-mat suit and respirator, preparing myself to contact the stereotypical, greasy car salesman.

It would seem luck was on my side as I called Albany Subaru and was delivered into the capable hands of Calvin, a genuine person, who would become my patient advocate. Albany had a manual in the color I liked which was just what I wanted! Unfortunately it had nearly $900 of extras that I really didn't need or want to pay for. On top of that there was a $1500 markup clearly demolishing all hopes to be able to get the car sooner. I thanked Calvin for his time and resigned myself to quietly wait for June, much like an impatient child waits to get out of church.

One week later, Calvin calls me. His sales manager has decided to remove the markup! (awwyea.jpg). My momentary excitement is emasculated when I remember that there is still $900 of extras mocking my hopes of owning this beautiful car now. I remind Calvin again that I cannot justify paying for the extras since my June reservation is priced at MSRP. Again, I thank him for his time and resigned myself to quietly wait, hungover from the brief excitement of Calvin's call.

Later that day, Calvin calls me again. His sales manager whetted my palate with the offer to remove $100 off the extras. I feel torn, my mind saying no; my heart, beginning to question my resolve. I appreciate the effort Calvin is putting forth; his disembodied voice speaking to me through the polished glass exterior of my iPhone. My mind wins and again I politely inform him that I cannot make exceptions to my price. Clearly, my mind had won this battle, but my heart realized that I truly had an advocate in my negotiations with the ever ambiguous "sales manager".

Four days later, Calvin calls me again, bearing a message on the wings of angels. The Great Valiant Manager of the Proud and Noble Democratic Land of Promise that is Albany Subaru Everlasting has decided to reduce the price again by $300. I am excited that the negotiations are continuing and my testosterone flows like electricity through my veins. I begin forgetting my resolve and distractions present themselves around my loins. Will my heart win over my mind? What was the price I had arranged to stick to before? Will someone else come in at a higher price? Why is this dog sniffing my crotch? How far away is Albany again? Should I get it now? I should, I should get it now! I SHOULD GET IT NOW!

Random people began popping out of windows, alleys, doorways and dumpsters. Everyone, screaming "IT'S MY CAR AND I NEED IT NOW!", like a nightmarish J.G WentWorth commercial. My heart was winning, and my mind was losing its grip. My mind called forth the strength of 300 Spartans and narrowly brought reason back from the edge of the sea cliff and beat back my heart, but it was not without cost. How much more was I going to be able to stand this temptation before giving in? I composed myself and thanked Calvin for his efforts. Sadly I informed him that I would not be able to accept his offer at this time. For nights, I slept a shallow sleep and my appetite was all but forsaken.

On the 7th day after, I could stand it no more. I pressed the non-existent buttons on my iPhone, hoping that Calvin would be there on the other end, like a priest in a confession booth. HE ANSWERS! I poorly hide the nervous excitement in my voice, and after some polite introductory conversation, I make my offer. Calvin is happy to hear that I want to continue our discussion and lets me know that he'll get back to me shortly. My fellow employees watch with bated breath as I rock slowly in my office chair waiting, waiting, waiting.

The old-timey ringtone on my cellphone startles my immediate deskmates and I bolt into a conference room. Hardly breathing I answer, "This is Chris", as cooly as I can. Calvin replies with his cheerie voice, "I think we might have an agreement here." All the muscles in my body relax as my heart simultaneously bursts through a glass case of emotion and begins to sing a sweet mocking opera. My mind is subdued and seduced by its lavish tenor and the promise of ever-nearing sensory indulgence that is the BRZ. The car was mine, the timing was right, and the stars had clearly aligned because I was going to be buying my BRZ three months early with a great price and from a fantastic salesman. I haven't had a smile on my face this big for the last 12 years.

[TL/DR: Pre-ordered my car in San Jose, delivery was June. Got the car 3 months early from Albany, with $900 of extras for $700 below MSRP.]

Congrats on the car and sounds like a great deal. Not to deflate your accomplishment in any way but if you were willing to look out of state, especially since you seemed to be on a fiendish search, you could find cars in Arizona and Colorado at invoice. But either way, glad to see you got them to make you a good deal and thank god for dealerships starting to remove markups. Dealers in CA really need to get their act together.

Congrats! I wanted that color as well, but I got my BRZ at invoice price so I didn't really care. In the end, I ended up with second color choice and paid a whole lot less.

Again, congratulations on your purchase and enjoy!

You should write short stories. That was very descriptive. I felt like caving in when he offered $100 off!

I love the Anchorman reference.

The detail in this story - I feel like Mark Twain just bought a BRZ.

Congrats on the good news and thank you for the great read haha.

WOW - that BRZ was sooooo easy to buy.
Here in aus the waiting list is 9 - 14 months with an online system only and if there are any cancelled orders they become $5000 dollars more than the online price.
Secondhand ones sell for much more than the new price.
This is because only 250 were imported last year and this years allocation is 550.
Maybe in my next life i could be born in the U.S.A.
