Body shop repainting. How many coats?

The body shop I chose is going to repaint my fender (lady hit it while it was parked). I asked what their procedure was. They told me, one coat of primer, one coat of paint, one coat of clear coat. Is this adequate, or should I be asking for additional coats. Maybe additional coats promotes orange peel? I don't really know.

I would let the pro do their job - especially if you don't know what you're talking about!

I don't know much, but to have no orange peel you have to wet sand and polish until perfection..not cheap.

If I remember correctly, and if we have any autobody guys here correct me if I'm wrong, too many layers means that you end up with soft paint.

I guess "technically" it is one coat of each, but in reality it is more like 2-3 coats (maybe more) of each product (give or take). Perfectly matching a texture of a paint job (no orange peel, a little orange peel, a lotta orange peel) is not easy.

If they own an operate a body shop they usually (not always) know what they are doing.

Just make sure the texture matches on the OEM panels with the new.

Don't allow them to "buff" "polish" or "detail" the car other in the area they are repairing.

Depending on the damage they might only blend the paint, and if they do it should be done to the hard edges of the panel, not 8" or so from the repair. That is shoddy work.

Share with them that you don't want any swirls in the newly painted panels. They will likely "buff" the paint if they get too much OP but ususall never do a secondary finer polishing to work out the buffing marks.

If you share your concerns with them up front they MIGHT take a bit of extra care. However, they are only paid by the insurance for X # of hours and that is all they do. That said don't allow second hand work either.

If they fail to do the work properly don't accept the car, and call the insurance right then and there. Photograph the concerns at that time. Once you take the car out.........they are really not responsible unless the clear coat starts to fall off .....

Cheers,
GREG

Make sure you ask for color swatch samples before they start so you can verify the paint color and texture match

Depends on the paint system being used and the color itself. Primer is usually 2 or 3 coats with the proper flash time in between. I let it sit for a day to shrink up then block and re-prime with one additional coat. Helps keep sand scratches and shrinkage from showing down the road

Base is however many coats it takes for full coverage. Could be 2, could be 5. All depends on the paint system and pigment in the color itself.

Clear is 2 to 3 coats. All depends on what the tech sheet for that particular clear calls for as far as mil thickness goes

Depending on how close the repair is to the door they will probably be blending into the door for color match as well
