Yes, medium to large sized ball bearing center cartridge garret turbos whine like that. Yes, it does sound like a jet engine (also a turbine).

Curious how the gtx2867 i plan on getting would sound diffrent? Gt30 sounds cool but I want something smaller.

also depends a lot on intake material, design, location.. boost leaks.

The whine is the transmission.
The air noise is typical turbo noise with an open cone type filter. The noise when the throttle is lifted is compressor surge. |
