Hi all,
I know there have been a couple threads similar to this already, but they seem to be more focused on people who buy their car out of state and have it shipped back to their home state. I on the other hand, have placed a deposit on a WRB Limited MT in Colorado and am flying out the 28th of this month to pick it up and drive back to AZ. I am currently planning on deferring the state tax, title, and license fees to Arizona. So basically I will only be paying the cost of the car and the dealer fees. Is there any specific paperwork I need to be sure to get from the dealer, or is it as simple as walking into the AZ DMV when I get back, filling out the paper and paying them their dues? I have done some initial research but can't really find any definite answers on what AZ will require when I get back. Any info would be much appreciated!

I would check about getting plates. I bought mine out of state MA and they don't offer temporary plates. The dealer had to mail the title to me so I could take it to the DMV and register it, pay the taxes, and get plates for the car so I could drive it home. I am not sure how that works in AZ but that's what I did here. Also make sure you have insurance on it the dealer could not release the car to an out of state buyer without it.

Purchased my 4G Eclipse out of state, then paid the difference in tax, which isn't much, at the DMV. Pretty simple.

Usually the dealer can arrange registration in any state you choose as long as you provide proof of residence in that state.
In my case, I bought the car in NJ but because the car was to be registered in MI, MI sales tax was applied and I got a temp plate immediately which I used for about 3 -4 weeks till I got my MI plates mailed to me. I never had to step into a MI DMV at any point of time for this car. Just walk in with proof of insurance, insurance ID card, driver's ID, proof of residence, a nice pen and of course DOLLA BILLS! Good luck! |

I would call the dealer in CO and possibly your local tax collector for definitive answers. Laws and practices regarding tax and registration/insurance are going to vary state to state since they are under the jurisdiction of the states. So unless someone here also lives in AZ and bought in CO and drove it home, your situation can be different.

I think in most situations, you are required to pay the tax for the state in which you reside. The whole temporary tag/registration thing will vary greatly from state to state. I would recommend going into a DMV in your home state and asking some questions/describe what you are doing and they should be able to advise you correctly. Congrats and good luck! I know for myself, this was the only way to get the exact color/car I wanted without waiting 6-months. Plus I scored a great price to boot! |

Don't just assume that every state will provide temporary registrations. I too bought mine in MA, and because I didn't want to wait for the title to be sent to NY, I just decided to bring a trailer from U-haul to the dealership and bring the car home that way. Point being, not all states will provide temp. tags

Gotta agree with those above about temporary tags.
I bought a bike a couple years back in WA and in that state temporary plates are only good for a few days. I skipped down to Oregon and got tags valid for a few weeks. I think Montana I couldn't even get temps for a bike at least. It may differ for cars, but do your homework!

In my case, that's exactly what happened. They charged me ONLY the sales tax for the state in which I reside and register the car. |

Bought mine in Illinois and drove it back 5 hours to Ohio. Paid for the car there and was issued a 30 day tag for the window and some permit for the glove box. Got the title about a week later to take to the BMV to pay the taxes and get the plates. They then keep the title to send to the lender until we pay it off, which should be end of next month.

Yep, states vary as to laws. Once you figure it out though, enjoy. It's a blast breaking in the car in one night.
