Tire transport for track days

Hi how are you trackday guys transporting your tires to the track on the FR-S?

Anyone try something like this?

Rack looks good, little dumpling car underneath it - not so good.

There is a thread here with a little home made camp trailer using a tow bar and another using the tow hooks, if you don't want to put them on the roof or inside.

In my years working at the track I've seen all sorts of homemade tire transport. The one I saw the most of (after everything crammed inside the car) was the dolly type trailer for dragging a car using a tow bar. They come in various weights and can be towed by any height vehicle (usually have adjustment and they're short so they can ride on an angle), they can be rented (good if you rent your home too), better than a camp trailer which can get heavy once loaded.

I strongly recommend using a trailer or tow dolly rather than cramming everything in/on the car. Reasoning, that if something happens to the car while racing, your tow operator is not usually going to want to tow/flatbed your car with things on the roof. If you need to cram everything inside and you sit closer to the wheel, there's no guarantee the tow driver is going to want to cram in (or physically be able to). Assuming you can't leave the tires behind with a friend, you'll need an easy way to pick-up and go while also securing the tires (you can use a cable lock to tie tires to trailer/then use a hitch/wheel lock to prevent towing). *2 cents*

Recently I've been taking out the spare tire and putting one wheel in that well. That leaves enough room for two tires in the trunk and two side by side on the back seat. I also bring the jack, jack stands, tools and other equipment and an overnight bag, with enough room for two people to sit comfortably in the front. I'm around six feet and pretty big and can sit in my normal driving position. It's one of the reasons I absolutely love this car.

Our car was designed to haul all the tires inside with the seat-back down (although maybe not with larger wheels I guess).

Have you tried it? It is not so tidy as it looks in the diagram.

Works great with 17s with summers and/or stockers with oversized snow tires ...just saying

The roof rack is a clever solution, and fairly obvious, if one already owns a rack for kayaks, bicycles, etc.

Many local autocrossers use a small, dedicated, wheel trailer that works quite well. Google to find those.

Subaru ADVERTISED that the trunk will hold four wheels, presumably with this very thing in mind.

Some folks just drive their race tires to the track, if they're DOT approved. That can be risky, though, since that sticky rubber wants to pick up every stray nail and screw.

I was barely about to transport 4x 16" wheel/tires in the back of this car. I had to stack them on top of each other because there's no room to fit all four flat on the trunk floor and seats.

The car felt like a dog with the additional weight..

My pic above is with my summer rims, 18x8.5 and 18x9.5 and all four fit, however I did have to stack 2 rims on the folded down back seat. Not pretty but they fit no problem.

I can fit all 4 tires in the back seat and a full sized jack plus a large container in the trunk and still have room.
