So, just a few days after I pick up my new ride, I decide to try on the new rims I've had in storage for about 3 months. Loosen the bolts, jack up the car from the front, remove the wheel, and realise I needed different lug nuts for the project. Put the stock wheel back on, lower the car and continue with my day.

The next morning, I drive out to meet some friends for lunch and start hearing somewhat of a knocking noise coming from the front end of the car. It gets progressively worse during the 30 minute trip and was particularly noisy when turning left.

So anyway, we get to the destination and I checked the wheels, and discovered the front right wheel nuts WERE BARELY SCREWED ON. I had forgot I had loosened both wheels even though I just removed one.

I tightened the nuts and imagined what might've happened if the trip was longer...

because he's NOT ashamed that he made an honest mistake.
everybody makes honest mistakes.it doesn't mean he is less of a person ,actually
i think it takes courage to admit to something like this,because certain people have a tendency to look down on him,because they are "perfect",and "never" make "numb" mistakes. they are better than that,of course!..just sayin'

Better double check the threads on the studs just to be sure they aren't damaged.

that's pretty damn scary, but if the noise was that bad you really should have pulled over and taken a look. i can't tell you how many times i've pulled over because i heard a tapping in one of my tires (i've had tacks and nails cause flat tires in the past) only to find it was a rock stuck in the treads. sure i lost a few minutes, but at least i had piece of mind for the remainder of my trip.

Damn, 30 minute trip?

I did this before, but I got down my driveway, made a right, heard the clunking noise and pulled over immediately (I realized what I forgot as soon as I heard the noise). It was my previous car, and I always removed the front passenger side wheel to get to the oil filter easier, and only hand tightened the lug nuts.

I did the same thing many years ago on my old Civic. I was able to drive to my destination without any issues. But when I was leaving a heard a huge clunking noise and immediately pulled over. I had somehow forgotten to tighten down one set of lugs. Oh well, mistakes happen, good thing it didn't end worse!

The hubcentric stock wheel prevented major problems from occurring. If you had lugcentric aftermarkets, you would've vibrated that wheel right off the car! On the other hand, you probably would've been in "WTF!?" mode earlier and stopped to inspect it sooner...

I did something similar many years ago when switching between my summer aftermarkets back to my winter stocks - the aftermarkets had a hubcentric ring that fastened on to the hub, and I forgot to remove it when I put the stocks back on. As such, the rings ended up getting squashed from lateral pressure/movement as I turned and I had the clunking noise coming from both fronts that got progressively worse as I drove on. Finally pulled over and realized what had happened before anything worse happened.

Either way, I'm glad you caught it in time and nobody's hurt.

I've done the same, years ago, both fronts on my GTO. Had the front wheels off and just neglected to tighten them up. Strangeness going on while driving, pulled over, found the lugs loose and tightend them up on the side of the road.

Glad yours is okay too.
