CEL after running out of fuel

Yeah, I ran out of fuel. Not sure how, should have had over a gallon remaining and I had one more mile to go to the gas station.

Refueled on the side of the road. CEL afterwards. Checked the fuel cap to ensure it's tight, drove home. Checked cap again today, still tight but still a CEL today.

Anyone else see this?

It's been 3 cycles so far. That's why I gave it a few before posting anything but I'll drive it a little more.

Never ran a running vehicle out of fuel before so this is new to me.

It's not in limp mode, pulls just as hard as normal but it sucks I have no cruise control haha

Disconnect the negative brake cable and press the brake for 20-30 seconds, then reconnect the battery again. That should clear the CEL. If it comes back, then you have something going on that is tripping the code still.

How did you know you had "over a gallon remaining"?

Ive filled the car up multiple times within a mile or so of low fuel light coming and it's between 2.9 and 3 gallons remaining each time. I either used more fuel than I normally do, though it was 95% cruise control below 80mph, or the lguht came on later than normal.

I dont try to push it usually but I was on a toll road in the middle of nowhere and nearly back home.

I'm assuming that you used a gas can to refuel since you were stuck on the side of the road. It may be possible that some gas got into the breather tube on the filler neck which would have an effect on the cars evap system. This is why you are not supposed to top off new cars at the pumps. Most likely a solenoid saw some fuel in a vent line so it threw the code. Just clear it out either by the battery disconnect method or go to a local parts store like autozone and have them clear it.

According to the manual, when your gas light comes on, you have approximately 1.8 gallons of fuel left.

Nothing to worry about IMO. They are probably Lean codes that were set when the fuel pressure dropped when you ran out of gas. Not uncommon on our cars these days. You should see the codes when a Prius runs out of gas.

I dont make a habit out of it. I just really did not want to stop and pay a lot more for crap gas since I was in the boonies. I've only had it extremely low once before.

That's what I was thinking. My Bluetooth ODB adpater is broken or I'd just do it myself. Im sure got in there because the gas can I used was a serious PITA but that's what my roommate brought me.

I wasn't worried, car is running well. Just want to clear it so I can use CC again hahah (and seriously because I would never drive around with a CEL on and just ignore it)
