What's in a name? (86/hachi roku)
okay so we have an awesome new car on the way that (except in the USA) is called "86".
we have also had a fantastic car since 1983 with a chassis code of ae86. you would be kidding yourself if you think they arent related and the new being a major nod to the original. i think its great. however... does anyone else get w strange feeling of... i dont know what to call it. almost like an impostor? or diluting the legacy associated with the "86" or more specifically "hachi roku"? i mean, it sort of takes some of the magic away, no? up until recently (like a month?) if somebody said "he my buddy has this really wicked 86/hachi roku!" you would instantly know he is talking about the RWD 1980's corolla. what about a year from now? your friend says that same thing. doesnt have the same punch, does it? you have to stop and think "okay, does he mean the old school flavor, or the rookie? im not dissing the 86/FR-S/BRZ at all, i really hope i can get one! (backseat room be damned) but this has been on my mind lately. and for that im a little glad scion went with FR-S. i can only imagine what the AE86 guys in japan are going through when they think of this. your thoughts?

Theres already Yota-Hachi (Toyota 800=Toyota8)
Anyway, if we follow suit and trend, the car will be known as AS1 not 86. If we called the 86 by its given name we should have popularized the ae86 by its given name Corolla. 86 is a marketing strategy....AS1 is the name that will hold the legend 20years from now.

I was going to ask, what are Toyota and Subaru using as the internal chassis code? Is it AS1? Whatever that code is, that's what this car will be called.

Toyota will likely have its own chassis code for the 86/GT 86/FR-S.
Purely based on guessing, I'd suspect something along the lines of UX_10 or U_E10. The blank being some letter. It will almost definitely be U__10. Jeff

Never know. Thats probably what some people thought when the original ae85/86 made their debuts. Some people, im sure never thought theyd still be driven in pro level competitions in numerous countries around the world 25 years later...yet, here they stand.
No way to tell until the time actually comes

Quote:
i could see the 86 competing in rally as a direct competitor to the mustang v6, or similar RWD car... the 86 handles well when no on pavement, we have seen small clips of it on snow, and it does really well, i wouldn't be surprised if this car sees a large variety of motorsports back to the topic, the car was never made to go offroad, but its characteristics make it good off road, light great suspension, LSD, ect... the celica will have to be revived as awd turbo in 5-6 years for it to be successful and doesn't steal hype and popularity from the 86 plus if toyota was releasing a awd turbo car, subaru wouldn't be too happy now would they ;P
