iPhone app for ELM327?

Hey guys,
I know there is probably a thread for this already but couldn't find it so here goes.

Just wondering if there is an iPhone app that is compatible with the ELM327 OBDII bluetooth thingy. And if so, what app is the best?

iPhone doesn't support Bluetooth OBDII except for one that's specially made for iPhone and only works with their app. I can't recall the name right now. You have to get a wifi OBDII reader like the Kiwi wifi.

iOS doesn't have APIs to support generic Bluetooth serial connections like OBDII.

Could someone give model names/numbers of some android phones that I could get for cheap on ebay?

I figure if I can find one that has some issues but still powers on/has bluetooth, I could use it for this purpose.

I have an iPhone 4S and use Dash Command and the GoPoint BT OBDII adapter

Here's a link the the thread that I made while doing some testing for MPG's for Visconti back in August.

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13605

It has some screen shots of the data that you can display. You can also data log all kinds of stuff. I was mainly trying to track avg speed, rpm, etc to give an idea of driving habits and seeing what MPG I was getting.

I've got a Raspberry Pi for which I'm planning out projects. One of them is data logging obdii info to sync up with autocross run video from my gopro and displaying live numbers on the in-car screen with digital gauges (more useful for road courses). I'll post results if/when I get there if nobody beats me to it.

Do they have HDMI out? if so, there were a number of head units introduced at CES this year with HDMI inputs. could make for an easy display option.

RPi has HDMI and composite out. And I'm willing to work with converter boxes if the net budget impact is lower. I just got started, so I haven't done my homework yet on what's possible with the stock headunit, so it may not even be possible to do the gauges project without a large financial investment. It's all concept for now, but I have the components to get started once my work schedule stabilizes.

Yeah you are right iOS doesn't support the OBDII via bluetooth normally just via wifi.

But if you are able to jailbreak, I have been able to use this generic OBD2 : Universal ELM327 Bluetooth OBD2 EOBD Auto Scanner V1.4
with Dash Command by using roqyBT4 and roqyOBD4 jailbreak tweaks to allow the bluetooth link, but you need the jailbreak for those last two.

I figured as long as I am jailbreaking I will use the cheap $15 OBD2 for now and worst case if I end up giving up on the jailbreak I can pick up one of the wifi ones eventually.

i use IPHONE 4 ISO 7 for my ELM327 http://www.obd365.com/wholesale/mini...-v15-1601.html

It works perfectly with Devtoaster Rev and EngineLink. But not with DashCommand.

At first, it kept turning bluetooth off. Then I decided to delete the app from my iPhone and re-installed it.
Then, it was not turning bluetooth off, but kept displaying the interface communication error every time I tried to connect.

If you check the log after the error has occurred, it only has two lines. One saying it is trying to connect and the next line with the interface communication error.
I was trying to get more detailed info from the log when I accidentally got to make it work!

I taped on the "Not connected" button and on "Console" right away.
Surprisingly, several lines started showing in the log. That's when I noticed it was connected!
After that, just go back to the Menu screen and you are ready to go!

I then disconnected and tried to reconnect the usual way. No success. Again the interface communication error.
It only connects if I hit the button to connect and then go to the console screen!

It seems pretty clear it is a bug in DashCommand.

Try this procedure and please let me know how that worked for you.

I have gotten it to work with a Jail break and lic purchased for the OBDII Bluetooth hack. You have to fidget with it for it to connect the first time.
