Does this happen to you?

Getting a static shock from the silver metal button on the hand brake...because damn it happens to me a lot.

Just wondering if this is normal or if I've been rubbing up against more carpet than most people.

No, but every time I have to input the gate code. I always reach out and grab the post with my other hand quickly.

Be careful at gas stations too.

My guess is you are picking up the static from walking to the car, probably have rubber soles or similar insulator, and that button is the first grounded thing you are touching. I don't know how to avoid it, but if it happens regularly you can touch the button first with the back of your hand instead of your thumb. It will discharge the static and its a lot less sensitive.

Usually when I get out of the car I'll rub my hands on my pants to get rid of the static. Normally works for me.

I haven't been getting them lately, with the moisture and cold weather, but on the dry days I get some crazy jolts when closing the door.

I find that you can minimize the annoyance by grounding yourself (and discharging the static electricity) by touching something with the back of your hand. Many fewer pain receptors there.

This.....me too. I expect it everytime I step out of the car now - I just touch the door quickly just to get it over with.

If you touch the outside of the car before and during setting your foot outside the vehicle, it will help avoid getting shocked. When I open my door, I normally just put my left hand on the inside of the door well and put one foot down on the concrete. Works every time for me.

I do seemed to get shocked more often, but it is mostly when I am getting out of the car.

I also get shocked getting out every time, bugs the hell out of me. Is it the seat material? Seems like it probably shifts/rubs a bunch and generates it.
