"WTF?"

So some non auto enthusiast a-hole (I had to explain who makes the "Si" and the fact that it is available in sedan trim as well) calls me at work to conduct a Scion FRS survey. After answering several questions, he asked me "the question." The one that really pissed me off! He asked "which ethnic group do you identify with? WHAT! WTF does your/our ethnic group have to do with what we choose to drive? Age, ok, income, sure....but ethnicity? Who gives a @#$% who buys your products? As long as you buy, should be the focus.

Needless to say I replied "HUMAN!" If that's not good enough for "them" perhaps I'll have to find something else made from a competitor to drive/support.

Before the call ended, I told the young man "you'd better have "them" fix that!

Its all a part of the advertising game. They are trying to structure advertising around demographics along with age, interests and so forth. It seems a bit intrusive, but i have dealt with them in advertising our business.Sometimes they are looking for specifics when submitting surveys. There are surveys in which I did not even get past the ethnic group question because the quota was already filled with that demographic.

In order for surveys to be more representative of the population, they have to have diversity.

Ethnic group will help identify that.

They need to identify who their buyer is as closely as possibly in order to optimize the effectiveness of their marketing dollars. Period.

Nothing offensive about it, but you do reserve the right to decline if they ask your ethnicity. It's not the same as racial profiling at the airport!!

Ding.

Its not racist to say the fact that certain white people buy this car... certain Asian people buy this car and so on.

Its all a matter of cultures really.

Its all marketing.

From my experience the ethnicity that I've seen are most into our kind of cars are Asian, Caucasian, Black, and Hispanic... Let me know if I left any out.

It's surprising what things can set one person off and not have any affect on the next guy. I was asked the same question and had no problem with the question or giving an answer. I didn't consider it racist and I still don't. It's all marketing.
