how to bulid your own turbo kit for cheap
Hey everybody im going to research on how the frs/brz community can build there own turbo kits and possible design my own. Manifold, downpipe, intercooler kit for a few thousand less than the current prices of 4500-6000$ i come from the turbo vw world and have had several turbo kits on my personal show/street car. I have been costumizing cars since 1995 and have been working in the automobile feild ever since. I am not a master welder fabricator. But i do have talents and i would like to share with this commmunity
Lets start with a Horsepower Goal. 225 to 300 Wheel horse power. With boost from 8-12 psi Now to figure out a few possible turbos to source. pleas fell free to help me add to that list. 1. Garrett Gt28rs 2. Garrett Gt2871r 3. Nissan T25 4. Nissan T28 5. Mitsubishi big 16g, 18g, 20g. I would like to use a internally gated turbo. That means the wastegate is apart and inside of the exhaust turbine of the turbo. This will keep cost down, since stand alone external type wastegates start at 300$. And the extra money and fabrication involved in mounting them. So lets break down the parts list. Listed for highest to lowest projection of cost. 1. TURBO 2. Manifold 3. Tuning (ecuteck) 4. Downpipe 5. intercooler 6. Fuel system ( injectors, walbro 255 intank) 7. Blow of valve or stock type diverter valve 8. Intercooler piping 9. Intake piping 10. Oil supply and drain 11. couplers and C clamps 12. bolts nuts brakets misc Last edited by 1strwdcar; 12-10-2012 at 06:03 PM. |

Id talk to silverdub, hes making his own turbo kit and seems to be having quite a bit of success. He seems to be a straight forward guy and im sure he wouldn't mind lending some advice.

I have done it myself too, my cavalier was turbo'd for almost 5 years and 60,000km's before I sold it. But custom kits always have custom problems
Getting high end parts is not cheap, so when you go with lower end components to save cost you're also taking more risk. Turbo'ing an NA vehicle can be done but it's, not problem free, not as cheap as you might want to believe, and requires lots of patience, time, and downtime of your vehicle. The end result you can definitely be proud of, and I was. My car was fast and was very reliable, but it did not come without the occasional hiccup |

We are up in Dayton, and we will be working o a turbo setup this winter. Once we get the kit finalize we will probably sell it as a kit and as DIY parts. We grew as a business supporting DIY customers so we also do a lot of welding work for customers who mock up and build their own setups. So if you are in the need for a professional welder / fabricator my services are available for finishing and fixtures.

Jon,
did you guys ever get a car to work with? if not, send me a pm. I've done a couple kits myself, but wont be doing a custom one off for this car, sicne the guy I used to help fab the kits passed away last year. I have my fr-s and a truck, and can bring it up to you if you need to test fit a few parts. Anything for the community |

I built a single turbo for a 99 fbody (ran a gt35r, probably one of my favorite cars). Also built one for my 2010 mustang, but never got it running to the specs I was trying (things kept breaking). I think I still have a couple pics of both. i'll try to psot them up later. |
