test pipe VS High Flo

my FR-S is my daily driver and im working on my exhaust. would it be a bad idea to get a test pipe and get rid of my cat(MPG and reliability)?

Shouldn't effect reliability if anything you are replacing a cat that can fail over time, they are covered for 8 years or 80k miles though. MPG i couldn't tell you i don't keep track of it but doesn't seem any worse.

A HFC isnt going to reduce performance too much and a test pipe shouldn't hurt mpg or reliability but definitely get an over-pipe with it, you'll see far bigger gains. it up to what you want and how strict the laws are where you are. i ran catless for years in my s2k in canada and no-one cared but i cant say the same for south florida. IMHO get a Catted pipe will help to quiet an exhaust a little bit. maybe reduce drone as well

As far as the drone or raspiness issue i will say that you either need to keep the cat or get a resonated exhaust(one exception may be the Perrin un-resonated but no personal experience). No cat and no resonator is definitely going to be the loudest besides muffler deletes.

Keep your cats, go hi-flow, don't be that guy. I'm sure Florida has enough pollution as it is

The amount of pollution and particulate that cats keep out of the air is rather amazing. Driving w/o them is also usually a pretty hefty fine.

I vote high-flow.

I run a Motiv HFC with Perrin non-resonated... Sound level is perfect in my opinion- not too loud and not too quiet. I went HFC because when I go non-catted headers, I don't want to be "that guy" with the lawn-mower smelling car with yellow discoloration on his bumper. Always keep that idea in mind that you may turbo the car later down the road...

To further cement your selection, Nameless tested their exhaust with no Cat vs. HFC, and they made the same amount of HP.

Affect, not effect. Sorry, pet peeve. Like when someone uses irony when the really mean coincidence.

HF or Test Pipe isnt gonna have a difference in HP till the 500+ range. Its just not that big of an engine to make a difference at near stock levels.

I believe the OP lives in Florida. I'm not sure they care about how loud an exhaust is there
