Bigger oil filter?
Had anyone sourced a larger oil filter for our cars? I've always figured the more filtering the better, especially now that the oil change intervals can be extended with the newer oils. It seems there is plenty of room for a taller filter under the hood. Any ideas?

I assume that you'd have to add more oil as well

The bigger the filter the harder and longer it will take for the oil to go thru it unless you make the filter material thinner and then you haven't accomplished anything.

If I could find one that size and it fit I would run it.

OEMs are using smaller filters. Less volume to fill, and newer designs and materials have a lot less restriction. Using a smaller filter means oil gets to critical engine parts a lot faster, and even the smallest filters will far outlast the oil.
Use a quality filter. Having all the filtering capacity possible isn't going to help you if there is no debris to catch. If you look at the current trends from OEMs, the filters are getting smaller and smaller, and oils are getting thinner and thinner. It all comes down to efficiency, and there are numerous reasons why decisions like this are made. But by all means, if you want a big black filter on there... be my guest. I won't judge :P |
