Macross Fans

On other thread, I noticed there were a lot of Macross fan in here, so before making that other thread into offtopic, thought to make a new thread.

What's your fav Macross series? fav Macross song? and etc can be discussed here

As for me
Fav Macross Series: Macross 7
Fav Macross Song: I wanna say "My Soul For You" (from 7)... but "Ai Oboetemasuka" (Do You Remember Love) from original Macross looks like I've listened more than "My Soul For You" in iTune (459 time vs 971 times ). RIP to Kato Kazuhiko (the composer of Ai Oboetemasuka)

Oooh, interesting thread.

Choosing a favorite Macross series would be very difficult for me since the three I like the most - Plus, 7, and Frontier - all have elements that I love and hate so having one above the others is tough. Plus has some of the best music ever produced in a series and the origination of my penultimate VF - the YF-19 - along with a strong central story that revolves around memory, dreams (goals), and the lengths one will go to in their achievement. 7 has the most original story elements; music as a weapon, literally in the case of the Sound Pod Gun Nekki uses and the Sound Boosters on the other Fire Bomber fighters, and the idea of anima being the spiritual energy amplified and shaped by music. Not to mention the rock music leanings with a smattering of pop that clearly separates it from other Macross series.

That said, Frontier manages to eek past the other two because it provides two strong singers whose characters each grow throughout the course of the show amidst the backdrop of the Vajra attacks. Ranka goes from insecure and confidence-lacking fangirl who grows to become quite sure of her music and how much she wants to influence the world with her music while Sheryl starts the show as a dolled-up, sexpot veteran musician who cares only for the stage and her ego but through various events transforms into a strong woman who truly understands what love and sacrifice truly mean thus giving real life to her music.

Long story short:

Favorite series: Macross Frontier
Favorite Macross Song: I'd say "Information High" from Macross Plus because the scene where it plays, Isamu jumping to Earth and tumbling into the atmosphere amidst debris as the SDF-1 fires into the sky, is one I envision clearly every time I hear that song. After Info. High, my next favorite song is "Yousei" from Frontier; well composed and very emotional song sung perfectly by May'n as Sheryl Nome.

Hmm.. my three favorite ones are the original, frontier, and Macross Zero. Watched a bit of 7 and maybe plus but did not finish watching. To me, the character design for the original is defining all the characters in the following series. Hats down to Haruhiko Mikimoto.

In terms of the songs, again, the Ai Oboeteimasuka (Do you remember love) still gives me goose bump whenever I hear it. In addition, the songs in Frontier also give me that feeling. The ones in zero are pretty nice, but somewhat too mythical. Got no feeling for the songs in other series....

BTW, in terms of the air fight scene, I would say the ones in Zero are the best, maybe because it is happening on the Earth. There is a mix of video with M.O.V.E. dogfight on Youtube that always get my blood flowing.

There was this video from youtube that I was talking about. Unfortunately it is removed due to copyright issue (on songs by Avex Japan).

Gotta love original Macross. Original Macross is bloody & gory series of all the Macross series (even in that vid, it show a guy's head get cut off). I'm still waiting for BluRay ver to come out

Macross is the father of all the robot anime (along w Yamato & Gundam).

Sorry to pick on you. I thought Gundam was early before Marcos's (78'/79' vs 83'?). Donnoo when yamato was aired but I thought it is even earlier.

True, Gundam was released on '79 vs Macross was released on '82. Gundam was one of father for robot anime series, but let me explain reasons why I said Macross is father of robot anime (along w Yamato & Gundam).
  1. Robot Transformation: Macross was first to make one robot transform into 3 different types. Gundam did combine into 1, but never transform into different type until Z Gundam ('85).
  2. Music: Out of all the old anime series, Macross's "Ai Oboete Masuka" song is well known more than any other old anime series. In fact, 'Ai Oboete Masuka" out sold any anime song and for 5 yrs plus no anime song have out sold it (iirc Ranma 1/2 beat it).
  3. Triangle Relationship: First series to have a triangle relationship and main heroin didn't end w main hero (Even now days, still rare to see that plot).
  4. Idol: First to involve a idol and war together
  5. Movie: Macross was the first to go to theater ('84). Not even Yamato, later Gundam released Char's Counterattack ('88).
  6. Unknown Technology: First to use unknown technology into their own. It's common story, but original Gundam used technology that they had & known.
  7. Mainship Transformation: First to make Main Mothership to transform into robot.
Hope that help you understand reason why I said that statement

OK, hopefully this is not OT too much and becomes an Anime Otaku discussion.

1. The full robot transformation is unique in Macross for the Real Robot anime (Gundam, Macross, or even FMP). Don't forget there is the Giant Robot animes prior to Gundam. Robot Transformation is nothing new prior to Macross, but it itself is indeed creative to transform an airplane (F-14) into three modes. Z-gundam can only go two modes.
2. No argument there. Macross is always a good combo of music and plot. The air fight scene and the all missile out scene was also the unique ones. One can also argue that the fire burst scene during a fight is original.
3/4/5. No comment as I do not have anything to say on that one.
6. I am not so sure about the term "unknown technology". Yes, in Macross plot they *use* the alien technology to refurbish the SDF-1. I am not sure if the same technology is used to build VF-1. It seems that once they solve the problem of having that very strong control arm/frame to do transformation mid-air, the rest of that VF-1 was taken directly from real existing technology. BTW, that vector propulsion was just realized in F-22 and F-35 so that was original IMO in Macross.

On the other hand, Gundam has this mysterious Minophsky particles to block radio waves and make nuclear fusion possible in such a compact form. That is really an "unknown technology" that maybe real in existence. The space colony is no joke. There was one professor who has designed such island-3 type space colony with all the correct calculation to make 0.9 g gravity. The project was just deem too expensive to realize, also pending on many difficulties to solve.

In addition, Gundam (FC in '79) has this idea of New Type ideology, no matter how strange it is. This is something original in the Gundam saga but not found in Macross.

Yes, we had all different kind of robot anime before Macross or Gundam... but nothing came close to Macross robot transformation. Other robot anime series was just combination of two (or more) machine just joining together... vs Macross was one transforming into different types.

Fighting scene reminds me. I rarely see "Eyes Locking System" (or something like that), where camera lock on to the missiles by using pilot's eyes. Only closest one I can think is Kira's Freedom Gundam.

As for "Unknown Technology", I mean in the story. Gundam series, they kept all the robot, ship's technology background as human technology. Human invented and human made... vs Macross series, they use a ton unhuman/alien technology. Macross ship itself is a alien technology human researched an finally can used (somewhat). Same w VF-1. iirc 3 company joined and used alien technology "Overtechnology" in the Macross the ship. So technically VF isn't a human developed robot. They cheated using Macross technology.
