Window tinting in states that do not allow it

Just a quick question for you guys...

I live in Michigan, which has some strange rules on tinting. Mainly, the driver's and passenger's windows CAN be tinted, but only in like a 5" strip at the top (so the whole window can't be tinted. I was planning on getting my windows tinted when I get the car - I do wear glasses and contacts, and my eyes are really sensitive to light. I'll admit, I do also like the look and the privacy.

My question is how easy is it to get a prescription for tint in your vehicle, and what kind of things do you normally have to say to get one? Like I said, from wearing contacts my eyes are really sensitive to bright lights, but I'm not sure if that would be enough (not sure if you need some kind of diagnosed condition to get an actual prescription for something like that).

I would consider doing it anyway, but I've been pulled over twice before (different car) for tint...no ticket, but still...a "warning", and a log in some database I'm sure.

Thanks for any help/suggestions!

TINTED WINDOWS

Question: Can I have tinted windows on my vehicle?

Answer: The law that covers window applications is MCL 257.709 . The use of tinting is limited to the rear side windows, the rear window if the vehicle has outside mirrors on both sides, and the top 4 inches of the front side windows. There is a limited exception for medical necessity with a doctor's prescription, which allows for tinting to be applied to the front side windows as well. Michigan does not have a specification for the darkness of the window application, but does prohibit applications with a solar reflectivity greater than 35%.

Oye man. Sounds pretty restrictive. As always with any sort of impairment, I would see if your general practice doctor AND optometrist have something up their sleeve to allow you to tint your windows fully. They may have dealt with the situation before, and even if they haven't maybe they can help you get the ball rolling with state legislators.

Alternatively (as the wet blanket method) they might just tell you to wear polarized sun glasses, and yellow tinted night glasses...

Lets hope for tinting option! =)

If your Dr. isn't a complete jerk, I don't think they'll have a problem writing a prescription. I've known people that got prescriptions for tint because of having skin cancer in the past. Here in CA, the law says no tint on the front windows at all, but nobody really enforces it that closely. Good luck!

As a physician, i dont know any doctor that would go hard on a diagnosis for window tints. Everyone in my family has tints for "migraines" and we live in metro detroit and no cop has ever given us a ticket. I wouldnt recommend limo tints just cause cops will specifically target you given its a pretty conspicuous car and it makes it a bitch to see out of at night. But tints definitely make it look better IMO.

Plenty of places will do it...that's not the hard part. I'm worried about being pulled over and ticketed. I've been pulled over twice for window tint (different car years back) and was let go with a warning both times...I'm just sure my luck would run out sooner or later

Thanks for the tip! Being in MI that means a lot (shows there is SOME hope). And I wasn't going to go too dark...thinking 35% all around (minus windshield of course). My optometrist is a pretty cool guy...just hope he's ok with it
