Detailer's Domain: Scion FRS - New Car Prep and Opti Coat/Clear Film Installation

Subject: Scion FRS
Requirements - New Car Prep - Opticoat - Clear Film Installation

I have to say these guys (FRS/BRZ owners) get it. They are all doing what's right for their new cars at an early stage in its life. New Car Prep the "RIGHT" way/Opti Coat/ and many now are opting for clear film. This is a great way to protect your investment.

Take a look at how I was given the this new one, wrapped from the factory plus 3m masking tape on areas not covered. Customer drove up from Virginia!!!

Subject - Scion FRS
Requirements - Full Exterior Paint Correction/Opti Coat/ Clear Film installation. (Full Hood, Full Fenders, Mirrors, Lights, Door Cups)

For a new car this one was in pretty bad shape. The typical sticky paint from the imports made this one tedious to work on
Exterior

- Tires were spritzed down with Adam’s All Purpose Cleaner and washed down
- Wheel wells were cleaned up

- Wash down and rinsed
- Door jambs were cleaned up
- Nano Scrub AutoScrub

- Tires dressed

It's exactly what it sounds like. A clear plastic film that is applied to the car that offers paint protection. It's also known as PPF (Paint Protection Film). The 2 more popular choices are 3M or Xpel. I went with Xpel Ultimate film as it has some self healing properties. It offers protection against rocks and debris. Most people get it on the front of the car, i.e. hood, bumper, headlights, fog lights, and mirrors.

The factory option of the bumper applique is also PPF.

OC is a clear permanent coating that acts like another clear coat on top of the paint. PPF is a plastic film. PPF has some shock absorption capabilities and can be easily removed with some heat. OC has to be polished off with a DA. You can apply OC below or on top of PPF.

Personally, I put OC on my entire car and then had Xpel Ultimate put on covering the full bumper, fenders, hood, headlights, fog lights, mirrors, door cups, and rear bumper applique. I plan on putting a coat of OC on top of the Xpel the next time I detail the car again.

Lot of work, but looks great! Just ordered bunch of stuff from DD. Most excited about the AutoScrub, hopefully much faster and less messy than clay, but still effective and no marring.

You quoted me, but mention Detailers Domain, so not sure who your question is addressed to.

For me, I maintain the shine by washing the car routinely and using a quick detailing spray or Optimum Gloss enhancer. You don't have to wax it as wax won't stick to the OC layer. . .at least it shouldn't.
