shining your tires

I was wondering if I'm the only one who doesn't shine their tires during a car wash?

First it's because I never bought the products and even though I love that wet/slick look of a clean tire. It just goes away after a day of driving on nyc roads - not even worth the effort.

I wash my car every few weeks, but never shined my tires. I kinda just scrub as I clean the wheels. Am I the only lazy bum out there to skip this part?

shining them keeps them cleaner. i wipe the stuff on and give it a clean look, not a super shiny look.

I use Adam's All Purpose Cleaner on the tires, scrub them with a tire brush, rinse, let dry, and then use Adam's Super VRT. It doesn't leave a glossy look, more of a matte look.

I had a guy at our local car wash sell me on the VRT. He kept saying "Try some, no sling! No sling!" heh. Works great though.

Occasionally I would use just a little "Meguiar's Hot Shine" after a clean wash. I've heard that silicone based tire shine products (Armor All...etc) is reallllyyyy bad for the paint.

Just make sure you don't use too much otherwise the tires end up flicking that sh*t all over your paint as you drive.

Armor All has been a water based product for a few years now like a lot of the tire dressings. No longer unsafe for use on tires and plastic trim etc. As for applying it so it doesn't sling, the best thing to do is drive your car around the block to force all the water out of the treads. Apply the tire dressing to an applicator. Never apply directly to the tire. Apply to the sidewall nearest the rim first and work your way out to the tread. That way there will be very little left on the applicator and it won't fill the edges of the treads with dressing.

Personally, I put tire dressing if I'm going to spend a day detailing the car. If it's a normal carwash, I don't bother.

303 aerospace on everything! gives the tires a deep rich gleam (also nourishes the rubber). Spray on and let dry.

I like a clean looking tire but not the wet look that many desire. If you want a product that will last more then a few days in NYC and will not sling and is easy to wipe on I recommend Garry Deans Tire Gel from Premium Custom Detailing out of Tampa Fl. Garry makes some great detailing products and you won't be disappointed.

I agree...I even put sealant over the tires and they are lasting like forever so far even in the rain we have been having.

The problem with over the counter products they only last for like 1-2 days...Professionals dont use that stuff...My tires are still shiney so far for the last 2 weeks.
