4 months later..dealer has not submitted paperwork to DMV

I bought my car back in the middle of May. Today I decided to call my state DMV office to inquire why I have not received any correspondence from them. They informed me the dealer has not submitted anything to them regarding my purchase. They stated they can not input anything or prepare a title until they receive the documentation from the dealer.

Has anyone else experienced over a 4 month delay between the dealer and DMV?

Sounds to me like you can go through all the red light cameras you want?

Damn! I've had about a 6 week wait before. Never 4 months, thats ridiculous.

In Colorado, vehicle registration taxes are a percentage of MSRP (not purchase price) and the percentage depreciates each year from the date of purchase. First year usually covers 13-14 months because it includes the gap between purchase date and registration date, each month added is at the most expensive (1st year) rate. As-is, I'm expecting about $600-650 for first year reg, including two months of waiting for DMV paperwork. If I had to wait two additional months, it would add another $80 and I would be pissed.

No way. I hope they are still in business. You better jump on this as fast as you can and ask to take the paperwork to the DMV yourself if necessary.

I had that happen to me once. It was annoying. Then the DMV wanted late fees for taking so long. I managed to get the dealer to pay them.

Did you trade in a vehicle? If they, for any reason, have a problem getting your old title cleared through the state, typically they will not submit the new car for plates.

I worked back office for a little time at a dealership..

Yes I did trade in a car that still had an outstanding lien on it from my credit union. My Scion dealer drug their feet paying it off (3 weeks). I had to make another payment on my trade in even though the dealer had it on their sales lot. Then to top it off since I transferred my insurance over from my trade in to the FR-S the credit union sent me a letter stating a condition of my loan was to always have insurance on it. If I did not submit proof of insurance they would purchase it for me and send me the bill.

I may be in the same predicament as my trade is STILL REGISTERED TO ME! My temp doesn't expire til the end of the month but it's been at least 6 weeks.

Update: I talked to my dealer and they claimed they mailed the paperwork to the DMV in August. The DMV still has not received it and they sent me a copy of the letter of inquiry they sent my dealer. They used the language about if they did not submit it with 14 days they would fine them and look at pulling their license.

I went to the dealership for an oil change Saturday. It was very eventful to say the least. When I got home I looked closely at my receipt. It stated a vehicle inservice date of August. I actually bought the car in May.

More red flags for me and questions.

Had my plates etc in around a week, super quick. I'd contact the dealer, probably toyota too considering its probably illegal to drive that car for so long without proper documentation.

Who are you communicating with at the dealership? Salesperson? Sales manager? I'd say it's time to escalate...

My Scion dealer is part of the Asbury Automotive Group which has about 80 dealers in the southeast US. There are 6 dealers in this group close to me and it seems there is one central title department for all 6 dealers. This is who I have been communicating with along with Toyota Financial Services who the car is financed with and is actually suppose to hold the original title since they are the lienholder.

At least I have the car in my possession. Toyota Financial has nothing.
If I defaulted on the loan it would be dicy for them to repossess it.
