Need Help: Buying BRZ out of State!

Hi. Anyone here buying a car out of state? I live in CA and will ship the car from Colorado. I don't really know what are the procedures for buying a new car out of state. Would appreciate any experience from you guys.

One thing that I'm quite sure is that I have to be there when doing a paperwork once the car arrive at the dealership, right? but what other things that I should do or I should know about?

I bought my car in MA while living in GA. The dealership should take care of sending you the documents and usually will highlight what you need to sign. In my case I had to have the documents notarized as well, that usually takes care of not being there. Then you just send the documents back with any down payment. If you are taking care if your own financing you just need to send them the check from the bank as well.

I live in CA. Bought my BRZ in AZ. They over-nighted the paperwork, I sent it back then next morning. After the loan funded, they threw it on a truck and shipped it to me.

Here's what I have had to do so far to get it registered/titled.

- Smog...yes, they will make you smog your brand new car. Sucks. You are also forced onto the 2 year smog cycle instead of getting to waive it for the first 5 years like you would get to if you bought it in CA.
- VIN inspection. Most DMV offices can do this. Check to be sure before you go.
- Paid tax on the sale price of the car and registration, title fees, etc, etc to the DMV.
- Title transfer from other state to CA. DMV will give you the paperwork to do this. You send or fax it to your lender (assuming you have one) and they send the title copy to CA DMV.
- After all that is done, you get plates and stickers.

I'm assuming you're getting yours from Heuberger? I was originally going through that dealership.

Yapp, I'm trying to finalize the deal with Heuberger Subaru. How come you get it from Oregon? So with what you said and the other guy said, it will much easier if I just fly to Colorado and finalize the paperwork there? Do I finalize the paperwork prior to ordering the car or after the car arrive at the dealership? Thanks

I did this with two cars in the last 2 months, both from CO. One didn't do the title work right so I had to fill out an additional form at the DMV, but they sent all the crap to them. One dealer collected taxes, the other didn't. That shouldn't apply to you obviously.

It's not too big of a headache really. The smog stuff? Yeah, move to CO!

I put in deposits with both dealerships. The one from Oregon came in sooner and actually got a slightly better price. However, Heuberger is a great dealership and was extremely helpful, especially with out of state purchase inquiries (I had plenty of questions just like you). The paperwork will not be sent over to you until the car actually arrives at the dealership; however, it will be mailed overnight. The package should include a return envelope that is already prepaid for overnight. Once they get the paperwork back and processed, car's on the truck and delivered. Overall, from the time the dealership mailed me the paperwork to when I got my car was 5 days.

My sales guy took the time to highlight everything that I would need to approve/sign/etc. which made filling out everything a breeze. I would assume they guys in Colorado would do the same for you.

As for taxes, you can either have the dealership directly charge the CA tax rate on the vehicle, or you can pay the difference between CO and CA rates when you register the car here. I just had my dealership charge since Oregon doesn't have sales tax...must be damn nice to live there.

I forgot to mention i'm flying out to Denver this Saturday to pick up mine (not from Heuberg though). I wanted to hang out with my little brother so he's coming along and we're driving it the 800 miles. The dealer were very nice people and didn't do the BS markups and dealer add-ons they do here in SoCal (It's really quite offensive but I don't blame them). I'm signing all my paperwork there but they had to gain my trust before I offered them my personal info and deposit (YMMV). They simply wouldn't go below MSRP for the trim/color I wanted otherwise I would have used that savings to ship the car here.

They are charging me my local city/state tax there but frankly i'm expecting there to be some "issues" at the DMV trying to reconcile this. I'm going to get as much paperwork as I can while i'm there at the dealer.

The SMOG issue is REALLY quite annoying. All the BRZs sold in the US are CA spec! This car is 50 state legal not some 49 state legal diesel. Goodness...

What's the name of the dealership in Oregon? Does it has well amount of volume? I got pretty sick deal to, end up with $200 less than my local dealer and I got clear bra and tint as well. But I'm not sure whether to let them do it (bra and tint) or should I do it in other place? Heuberger basically use 3M and that's a big deal (positive way).

Yeah, they can sometimes charge your local tax, they can also charge THEIR local tax, which gets put toward the CA tax when you register. I chose not to pay any tax when I purchased it because I knew it would be easy to pay the DMV directly.

As for smog...I know, super lame. I couldn't really find any definite info whether or not a NEW out of state car needed it. But when I went into the DMV they said their computer said it needed one and wouldn't let me continue without it. So I put my BRAND NEW CAR on a damn roller dyno smog test. LOL.

Carr Subaru. They're volumes are nowhere near Heuberger, but I got extremely lucky, which is why I ended up with them. A guy before me ordered pretty much the same car as me, but they ended up delivering not only his but a duplicate. Since it was extra profit to the dealership (it didn't count towards their allocation as the delivery was a screw up) they were willing to deal on the car for 1000 under msrp. Otherwise my car was originally slated for october delivery.

I purchased two cars from Carr Subaru in Beaverton, OR when I lived up there. They treated me well.

A friend of mine just bought a used S2000 from them, this week.
