Hey all,

New member here. I've been reading this forum for a while now though.

So here's the dilemma.

I am driving a 1985 MR2 NA. A whopping 112 hp and a 0-60 of about 7 or 8 seconds. To the point it doesn't really matter.

The car has been a little demon. It's gone through 3 engines (only cause the mechanics were dumb). And a ton of fixes. Well it's running. It's been in an accident (got rear ended from a dead stop) so it's not pretty. It runs but it's not pretty.

Here's the problem. I'm looking at the potential specs of the 86, and I've been a fan of it ever since the FT-HS got posted on the Toyota Future site. The original projection was for 400+ HP which was very enticing to me. Now it's at 160, only 48 more than my 2. What would be the point in me getting a new car?

The mods I would do would be to swap a 2zzge into the 2 and tc or sc it. Get it a paint job and rework it to like new (I even have replica oem decals like my avatar). But that would cost about $12,000 to do everything I want to it. So why not just buy a new car? I would then have some resale value above $500, nice seats, and that elusive new car smell. And an actual audio system that hasn't been %100 purchased from walmart (I'm cheap).

What I'm getting at, is I really hope that this car doesn't disappoint. If it has over 200 hp, and is priced mid 20's. I'm gettin it. If it's as is, 160 hp and looking at $26,000, nuh-uh.

I hate this whole waiting for info!

I'm saving up cash in the meantime... I'll probably end up waiting a year or two after it's been released to see how the aftermarket market looks.

Otherwise my next best car would be a 370Z. Then a G37, Camaro SS, BMW 335i, then a Hyundai Genesis 3.8. Not that I've thought about it that much....

Judging by your list of potential cars other than the FT, I think you've got to figure out for yourself what it is exactly you're looking for. Those cars are mostly quite vastly different in price, speed, and handling characteristics. The only one there that looks to be a direct competitor for the FT is the Genesis, but in 210 hp form, not the 3.8.

You've got 2 years regardless to save up some money and think about it.

160 is a bit on the low side, It will be at least 180. I can guarantee that much.

Like WC said, you need to first figure out what you want. There are pros and cons for all of those cars.

I am pretty price sensitive. I am going to keep saving up and I should have pretty damn close to half the price of the FT saved up by the time it's released.

I'm really hesitant to pour money into the mr2 just because I've already put close to $10k into it just to keep it running. And it's worth less than the first Hyundai ever produced. It's got 5 years to go before it's a classic, and what then? It'll drop to $250 in value? I definitely want some of the new bells and whistles the whipper snappers have in their cars. Like power windows and locks to name a few...

Basically I'm saying - this FT-86 better live up to the competition, otherwise I'm going to be one pissed off Screaming Chicken die hard. It doesn't even have to be super fast, maybe a 0-60 sub 7 would please me, and a turning radius comparable to the MR2 would be fantastic. Otherwise I'm not going to drift or anything in it. I just like being able to see headlights in my rear view mirror immediately after a green light.

anything less than 200 hp and more than 27k very very well equipped and more than 2800lbs will be disappointing

Ha ha, yeah. Nothing done to it. I live in Florida, where all the old people move, and where the nearly old people go on vacation. Well, where I live is known as, Holiday - Where Floridians Retire To.

That, and all the kids around here are retards and don't know how to drive. Primarily Honda Civics with muffler tips.

of all the cars you listed, i'd probably get the 335i, FT86, 370z, G37, and none of the others. in that order if the money didn't matter. hell, if i can land the job i'd like, i might never get an FT86. M3 > FT.

You can go fast in any car...with exceptions. It doesn't have to have 200 hp to go fast.
