As someone who sells these for a living, I am always dealing with showing customers how to use units, dealing with problems of units down the road, and hearing complaints, my vote goes to Pioneer hands down.
You have the AVIC-Z140BH listed which is a great unit but I actually prefer the AVIC-X940BT. Basically the Z140 has a larger screen, HD radio, Nav traffic, and limited voice control (which sucks). The X940 is a couple hundred bucks less and the biggest difference which is why I prefer the X940 is the volume knob as opposed to buttons. The reason I choose Pioneer over alpine, kenwood, or clarion is due to the complaints I have had for these units over the years. The biggest complaint I get about the Pioneer is the initial load when you start the vehicle which is a bit longer than the other units. While this can be bothersome in my opinion it is far less irritating as the complaints ive had on the other units. The biggest issue with Kenwood is the units adaptability. When you buy a unit it will work with the current and past iPods and iPhones. When a new product comes out it wont work with the kenwood unit. There wont be any software updates for this, you will need to buy a new unit or extra parts. Alpine can be a PITA to get repaired if it is ever needed. Their repairs are slow and from my experience parts were frequently not available. Clarion in my opinion is really a step behind the other three brands. It has made a lot of progress but just isn't as nice as the others. Another thing I like about the Pioneer units is how easy they are to use. The user interface is simple and anyone can use it without a huge learning curve. I understand a lot of people may not agree with me but these are MY experiences with these companies and products. Honestly you can't really go wrong with any of these units and you'll probably be happy no matter which one you go with. Just giving my .02

I just have the Clarion NX 702 installed, (Genesis Coupe)
Were as my girlfriend has the top of the line Kenwood unit in her FR-S. As I can judge the units up close , both are close, as of speed, navigation and Bluetooth options. Sound wise, can't say anything bad nor good, sins I run my OEM amp and she runs the speaker level too the OEM speakers. However, a big price difference is there between the units. (I paid 735$ for the Clarion, were as she paid more then a 1000$ for the Kenwood) I use an iPhone on the Clarion, and she uses a Samsung Galaxy 2 on the Kenwood. The small extra's on the Kenwood I have seen are mainly the ability to control 2 camera's and the Kenwood has the options to see different angles from the camera's where as mine only does the rear and there are no options for different angles for the rear camera. Other then that they are close. One thing about the Clarion, it's volume controls on the unit itself are far easier to control the the Kenwood, (there are less of them) as for the Kenwood it has a whole row of buttons too operate the unit and sins the FR-S has no steering wheel controls, it makes the unit more difficult to operate while driving. For the FR-S I would choose the Clarion, save some money and it is a little easier to control the the Kenwood. As for warranty's, only time will tell, and I hope we will never need them. Time will tell. |

I've had an X930BT and it was OK. It was a bit sluggish and the interface was nothing to write home about, but it worked. I'm assuming the 140/940 doesn't veer far from that.
I'm passing on the kenwood because of its ridiculous loading time for USB MP3's. And the circle interface is stupid IMO. |

140/940 interface is a bit faster than the 930 but essentially the same layout. They also fixed some issues with scrolling where people were selecting songs instead of scrolling due to touch sensitivity.

Great points by everyone. I kind of like the z140 over 8400bh due to built-in nav incase the phone could be out of signal range or too slow at certain area during the traveling. That 8" 928 is almost double the price of 140 but can't go wrong with alpine. So I'm down to these final 2 for frs now...; alpine stated this 928 has very nice crispy sharp screen and new faster OS, plus that extra inch look huge for some reason
; I'm still review these 2 for final.
