hey guys,

can anyone recommend a good helmet brand or a good helmet for a beginner for AutoX or SCCA?

Bell Mag is just perfect! I've used it for some 8 years and just ordered the new one.
Just make sure it's SA2010 because event organizers changes requirements every 5 years or so.

If only for autocross, go to your local bike shop and just get a motorcycle helmet.
Pick one that fits the best. Open faced ones are good and make it easier to communicate.
Also, most motorcycle helmets have removable padding for easy washing!

M class helmets are also typically cheaper, too!

Give John Ruther at Northstar Motorsports (www.northstarmotorsports.com) a call. If you ever opt to do an HPDE track day, you'll likely need an "SA" rated helmet.

As noted above it depends on how far you plan on taking your car. If you are attending an auto-x for the first time they usually have loaner or rental helmets that are approved for their event and you can save money on buying on if you realize auto-x isn't your thing. It's not a bad idea for your first event.

I love my Simpson Voyager. It's just a little tight with my glasses on, so I'll probably have to switch back to contacts.

I'd recommend an open faced helmet. It makes it easier to hear the car and an instructor. HJC makes some for $100 or so. You can pick them up at a motorcycle shop.

Pyrotect also makes some inexpensive helmets.

Open face is nice for autocross. I prefer closed face on the track, I've been hit in the face with way too much debris to go open face on track.

SA2010 if you plan on doing track events (although most groups accept Snell M as well), otherwise M2010 is fine for autocross.

For specific models, etc it's too hard to say. Every brand fits different (and in some cases different models in a brand fit different) and everyones head is different. The best way to find out what works for you is to go try them on. You want it to be "tight" but not so tight that you get a headache/pain. Too loose and you might as well not even bother wearing one.

go to amazon and search sa2010. also try to hit a bike shop and get an idea of what size helmet you are. try at least 4 different brands of bike helmet if you're gonna guess and buy a car helmet online.

I like the Bell Mag. Not as nice as the Arai open face helmet, but for the price it can't be beat!
