AVO's Hot Lava FR-S
Just got it thanks to the superhuman efforts of Rodland Toyota of Everett (Washington). We'll be doing a lot of work to it in the upcoming months, all of the AVO suspension and exhaust parts to start with, and then finally the AVO turbo kit!

Well, after about 3 days now... I've added about 90 miles to it and done absolutely nothing modification wise. The reason is simple enough, busy as hell, and need to break in the engine!
I have gotten more time with it though. I'm finding this to be one of the more fun to drive cars in my experience - relative to other stock cars of course. I think it's worth mentioning here that my "experience" includes about 8 years as a freelance motorjournalist working for about 8 different international magazines while I was in Japan. Now, it certainly doesn't compare, power wise, to any evo I've driven, or STI, or many other cars I've driven. It's strength, in comparison to those, is mainly in it's handling - excellent - and it's friendliness to driving around "spiritedly" even on city streets. An EVO or STI, or any number of other performance cars, are fairly stressful to push hard anywhere outside of a track. The Frisbee (FRsBrz) gives a positive vibe at nearly any speed and situation. |

I'll be heading down to Drift Office tomorrow with it, so will be able to rack up some mileage (well, all of 60 miles...) finally!

Haha, it's mainly to keep my wife from naming it something stranger... She calls the Honda minivan the armadillo.

So I finally hit 400 miles. That counts as break in, right?
I thought so too. So on went the silicone inlet and sound tube that I just got in the day before, along with the new panel filters. ![]() ![]() ![]() The install went pretty smooth, all things considered. It's no Subaru STI where you've got to route the inlet underneath the intake manifold (and I'm sincerely glad of that!). Getting the air filter lined up in the air box can be confusing at first, there's an very small lip to line it up with for the lid to close correctly. Driving it revealed no issues, and a bit more eagerness to get up and go. So I used that as an excuse to head downtown to pick up some people and get some more mileage on the car. I really do enjoy driving this car, even if the power is merely adequate on the freeway. It's actually quite easy to drive around even on narrow crowded city streets, the view outward is surprisingly good, with a good sense of where the corners and front is. It turns in well, and stops fast with little drama. The biggest issue is every single yahoo on the road has their inner racer suddenly surface any time they see the car. Going through the university district was particularly harsh, as every college kid driving their parents accord had to try and race against the car. Getting back in the 'burbs was no help, then it was the Ford F150's. It's not a case of whether I could win or lose, it was more a case of wanting to just drive around and enjoy the car, not wave big red flags at all the cops on the roads at night. |
