E85 time.
Time to switch back to E85. The average price for 93 octane around here is now $5.00 a gallon. It used to be about 30-40 cents more a gallon than regular but now it is consistently about a dollar more per gallon. I used to run on E85 because it was significantly cheaper than premium and gave better performance but there was only one station that had it near where I worked about 20 miles away. I have since retired and don't want to drive 20 miles to get gas. Today while sitting at McDonalds waiting for my order, I noticed a sign at the gas station that said E85@$3.29 a gallon.
Time to reflash my car and make it smell like a bar again. I haven't done the math, but it seems like I can get more miles per dollar on E85 verses 93 octane at $3.29 for E85 verses $5.00 for 93. I forgot the milage difference between to two. Anybody running E85 that can enlighten me? |

I personally don't think it's worth the headache- not only are you needing to retune the car for e85, you're making it significantly tougher to find fuel availability, and if where you live it still gets cold, making it harder to start the car potentially.

If you track your mileage you can calculate the cost per mile with each fuel and decide if it's worth switching fuels.

Well. I've never gotten more than about 14mph on e85, but I do have A JRSC and bigger injectors with flex fuel kit. For me, e85 would have to be less than half the price of premium to be worth it on a purely financial level. Then, going to the gas station every hundred miles gets old quick.
The car is a blast on e85. HP goes from 245 on premium to 310. |

Thanks for the replies, guys. You talked me out of it. Now I remember the hassles of emptying the tank and retuning and having only one source for fuel.
That, and after digging out my old OFT and making sure it still works, I loaded up some gas cans and headed to the only station with E85 within 20 miles. Upon arriving at the single E85 pump, I noticed there was a plastic bag over the pump handle. Went to the other side of the pump, put in my credit card, selected E85 and nothing came out. The tank was empty. Probably a good thing. I would hate to get the last couple of gallons out of a tank of E85. Would probably be about half water. So much for that idea. |
