Champ Car / SCCA Rollcage
For a new project with a 2013 BRZ, I am reviewing options related to rollcage to meet Champ Car and SCCA rules. Champ seems more restrictive, requesting 1.75 x 0.95 bars for cars over 2500 lbs.
I am going to look on something custom too, but what is people’s overall experience with cagekits? Any other options or recommendations? https://cagekits.org/product/frs-roa...bar-roll-cage/ |

Hi,
Great to hear you’re building an FRS for ChampCar. I’ve been competing with them about 3–4 times per year, mostly in Texas and Oklahoma, running a ’94 Miata NA with full aero. My track car is actually a 2016 FRS—that’s the platform I learned on, and I really enjoy it. I’m curious about your rationale for choosing the FRS for ChampCar. One of the historical downsides was the limited fuel tank capacity, but starting in 2025, ChampCar allows larger fuel tanks, which removes a key constraint for this platform. Are you building an automatic car? For those not familiar, ChampCar uses an index system: each car has a base value, and modifications add points. Once you exceed 500 points, you start taking penalty laps. Key points for the 2013 Scion FR-S (VPI): Base Points: 500 (manual transmission) Automatic Option: models with an automatic transmission may receive a 75-point deduction, typically bringing the base to ~425 points That automatic deduction can be strategically valuable—it allows modifications that wouldn’t be feasible with a manual build. Would be interested to hear how you’re approaching the build. |

So if I read your response correct, a stock manual transmission FRS is at 500 points and ANY mod would push it over and assume penalty laps?

Brz/frs is at 490 VPI points. I chose the platform as I really enjoy driving it and have better access to spares. May not be the best/more competitive platform, and probably not the best to maintain either.
I did not want a Miata, a BMW E36 could have been a great alternative. The 10 points I am going to spend on oil cooler. All other mods are free ones, tires, shocks and so on (a fairly similar to SCCA T5). Other point. Me and my team will be rookies, so we will have to learn all the details on how to plan for an endurance race. |
