AE86/FR-S Exhaust Tone

So I'm sitting here watching Initial D (for the first time), and in episode 8 (Time's Almost Up!) at about 12 minutes in you can hear the AE86 downshifting. I'll be damned if it didn't sound exactly like the FR-S. I've never heard an AE86 in person, but can anyone attest to the engine/exhausts sounding similar between the two cars in real life? Because if that's why they made the FR-S exhaust to not sound like the typical Subaru rumble, I'll take it!

Apparently youtube videos that have advertisements don't let you post a link to a specific time in the video. On that video you linked, it's at 11:52.

They're close but the subaru rumble is still there, but very mild making it sound growly. The 4AGE has a kind of rough mechanical sound to it but its 'smoother' than a boxer. I dont think boxers can get a 'smooth' sound like an inline motor.

If you put an EJ25, an FA20, a 4AGE and a 2ZZGE together you can hear the progression from rough to smooth in the engines in that order lol. (subaru boxer with its distinctive rumble, BRZ without the boxer rumble, old high revving inline 4, newer high revving inline 4)
(its harder than i thought finding acceleration videos.....theres a shitton of crap quality ones floating around lol)

Ive owned and driven a fair few 4age's (Blue tops, Red Tops, Silver Top 20vs, Blacktop 20v's, 4agze's). and IMHO, the GT86 sounds like its not quite working anywhere near as hard....

the 4age always sounded completely strung out when thrashed... it seems the GT86 takes it in stride imho...

Which sort of sucks, I like the sound of my engine screaming like its about to pop

A few things.

1. That AE86 acceleration video was hilarious.

2. The valve lift in the Toyota sounded very similar to my B16A: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsehKsRMWpo"]CRX B16A VTEC Crossover - YouTube[/ame]

3. I'm assuming Subaru doesn't do any sort of variable valve timing, do they? I miss my VTEC crossover after watching that Toyota video

4. There is a definite difference in sound between the 4AGE and the FA20, but they sound similar enough to me to make me happy Thanks for the helpful post!
