launching your 86 in second gear
Hey guys, before you guys decide to criticise me on this post, please take me as a newbie in driving a manual....
My last manual car didn't have the right amount of power, well it didn't feel smooth when i launched it in second gear, thats why i always started from the first gear....however, for the 86 to be idle at the lights or something, launching in second gear feels alot smoother than launching in first gear? maybe I'm pretty crap at reaching that friction point but still..... I'm asking whether launching in second gear is bad for the car itself? in particular to it's mechanics?

I used to do almost always in my skyline and start in 2nd gear. If you do it smooth enough and balance revs + release and you the car is not bogging down or drivestrain shudder, you should be fine. The idea is you need a bit of torque to break resistance and create motion.
Just remember if it is not protesting or screaming bloody murder you'll be alright. |

Extra clutch wear as you need to ride it longer.
Start in 1st, that's what it's there for. Unless you are on a hill, let the car roll forward, then use 2nd gear. |

Lol launch at 2nd? I feel bad for your clutch .. Unless your downhill then you will have enough roll to start in 2nd but first is there for a reason

As others have said there is added clutch wear but tell me why would you want to start off in 2nd gear anyway?

I used to drive a truck with 8 gears, so taking off in third was normal.
However, that was an engine build for torque, with this car you are better off starting off in first, unless you are already rolling or feeling lazy on moving downhill. Overall, it won't make much difference. |

Looks like you guys have never drove a stick! Start in neutral... Then pick a gear!
