Exhaust manifold gaskets - which way do they go?

The old ones look symmetric on both sides, so the direction shouldn't matter. But the new ones have a crushable lip around the holes. Which way do they go? Should the lip face the cylinder head, or the exhaust manifold? I'm assuming the manifold is steel, so lip would face the manifold to avoid indentations on the aluminum head...?

In case anyone's wondering, I put the lip side towards the cast iron exhaust. I was concerned that the lip might dig into the softer aluminum head and leave an inscription.
No CELs (yet)!
