I guess Colin Chapman was right - adding lightness certainly is good. 2nd gen needs ~230 (or more?) HP to beat an MX-5 with 184 HP - 25% more power for 20% more weight.

And Miata is on 17” superlight forged BBS.

They’re both stock so it’s fair. Looks like the GT RS edition we get here, BBS forged alloys, Brembos and Bilstein shocks. Not sure if it’s available in other markets?

A few more factors:

Miata has higher % of static weight on the rear that helps the initial launch
Miata has higher center of masses, that adds even more dynamic weight to the rear during the initial launch
Miata has less cross section, so less drag at high speeds

That being said, a light car is no good if it's too small to fit me with a helmet.
A Miata can't comfortably fit me even without a helmet (6'4").

Reminds me a lot of the 1st gen BRZ (when it came out) vs. NC Miata. Both platforms have gotten significantly quicker but the BRZ still has the edge.

Similar result to the Savagegeese drag race. Even when you win, its still not good enough for some.

Not sure the small differences in weight would change the outcome that much.

What caught my eye more than anything else, was the tiny license plate on the BRZ. Do you have choices in plate size in Australia?

Slimline plates are an option in the state of Victoria where I live, got them on my BRZ. Assume it’s the same in other states?

Regular number plates here (shown below), look pretty shit. Both cars in the review have the slimline plates.

They have all sorts of plates: sports teams, US style, JDM, Euro etc. Money maker I guess.

I think the real point should be, neither of these cars are drag racers.

If you want to drag race, don't buy either a BRZ or a Miata. Buy a Mustang, Camaro, or Challenger.

Ignore the 'numbers'. Just buy a car you enjoy driving (instead of caring about bragging to strangers about 'numbers'), and go out and have fun.

Camaro is actually a very well rounded road track car though, not just a straight line car..
