Short throw shifter reviews
Any reviews of the short throw shifter?
How much of a difference in feel and shifts? Also how much would dealer charge for labor for install? This is CA bay area if that matters. |

Don't, they all rattle. OEM is best.

I'm pretty sure he was asking about the STI short shifter, not "true" aftermarket.
Quote:
a) it's not making the movements much shorter b) but it does make the shifter much more crisp and provide better mechanical feedback (a) isn't necessarily a downside: the stock transmission mounts let the transmission move under load so much that people have been downshifting from 5th to 2nd when they wanted 4th gear instead. Some would spin, some would overrev, etc. I personally wouldn't want much shorter shifter with stock transmission mounts, and I do enjoy the STI short shifter on my 1st gen. A bunch of people who have stock 1st gen shifter tried my STI shifter and liked it. |

Mine arrived with the STi short throw shifter and I liked it right out of the box. The guy who went over my car at delivery asked how I knew to get the short shifter because they don't see many cars come in with it. I told him I bought every option for the car that I didn't want to install myself. He laughed and said it was a great choice. For reference he drives an STi and wasn't a random sales guy showing me how to use the radio.
He also appreciated the stock frameless mirror which I happen to love as well. |

Wait, 2019-2022 STI factory short shifters fit in these cars? I still have my 2019 STI factory short shifter in box.

How much shorter is the physical height of the shift knob with the STI short shifter?
I have no issues with the action of the shifter in my car, but from an ergonomic stand point, I wouldn't mind it being shorter. |

I've got about 2500mi in my 2022 Brz with the STI oem shifter installed at the port.
I had a 2016 with the Kartboy Shifter/Whiteline Trans Busing/Mtec Shift Springs. The 2022 STI shifter is just "more crisp" than the standard oem one, probably reduced throw by less than 10% but something about it is more mechanical feeling than the other Manual 2022 BRZ I drove. BilletWorkz is putting together a shifter that should be available in the next few week. They make nice shift knobs and everything I've seen of theirs is finished nicely so hopefully that'll translate to their quality of work in the short shifter

I installed one in my old 17 BRZ myself. As others have mentioned, I didn't see a difference in the length of travel between gears, but the feel was much improved. Just much more crisp and succinct. I think it lessens the shift distance by like, 3mm or something crazy small.
As to the physical height difference, it was negligible, if any at all (maybe i just didnt notice). Now, for the install, the hardest part was not ripping that rubber boot/cover thingy that goes around the link. I ripped it the first time and had to use the oem one that came with the original shifter (was the same size). Otherwise, install is a breeze. I will be doing the same thing to the 2022 once I get it.

I don't know about the 2020 tS but my 2018 tS's shifter was not anywhere near as short a throw or as crisp as the shifter in the 2019 Raiu Edition (Series Gray) that I drove. I asked the parts guy and he said there was an optional Short Shifter that was different to what came in my car so my wife ordered it for me and I paid to have it installed.
It was exactly the same feel as the stock one soooo... either the Gray cars have something different or there is something that didn't get done/added to/corrected in my car. The part number for the one my wife ordered is different than the one shown above. Here's the end of th box it came in. |

Short refers to the throw, not the height in this case. Short shifters for the 1st gen like the IRP and CAE are like 3 times as tall as stock with half the throw.

Thanks. I was aware of the shortened throw, but I seem to recall short shifters on some old BMW's also reduced the height of the shift knob itself. When looking into them for my E46, it was noticeably shorter in height.
