When will we see LED's in automotive headlights?

This topic was discussed on a moto forum in regards to the next Ducati Superbike called the "1198 Extreme" about having a couple of "firsts"

1)No more frame and even the trellis frame is gone

2)Being the first production motorcycle with LED headlights

I was ready to pull the trigger on the MV Agusta F3 but after seeing the next gen Ducati SBK, I might have to reconsider.

From what I gather, Audi utilized the LED headlight in their LeMans car and Ducati is looking to use that same technology.

Here is the article

With that being said, when do you think cars will transition over to LED aside from the current limitations; glare, lens position etc? We've seen traffic safety lighting and even some of the newer LEO vehicles using LED's; lighter, brighter and more efficient.

No frame?

I'm surprised we haven't seen LED headlights already. I hope they will be mainstream by 2020.

Yeah, crazy huh! I'm not sure it's a blessing in disguise or an accident waiting to happen. Could this be the newest technology going forward!?! Here is an artist's depiction

See this is what sort of frustrates me with cars, not too much technology gets ported into production like motorcycles do. Leave it up to the Italians I guess...

8 yrs before this becomes mainstream seems a bit long don't you think? Speaking of which, I was watching Back To the Future 2 a couple days ago and it's hilarious to see their vision of what 2015 would be like from a 1989 perspective.

So is everything mounted to the block and swingarm? That's crazy and exciting at the same time.

Ichi, I think we'll see it in a few production vehicles in the next 5 years, but I don't think we'll see it as often as we see HIDs earlier than I mentioned above. I was dreaming about LED headlights back when I was swapping everything from the turns to the domelight in my Isuzu I-mark to LEDs. Ahh.. memories.

And yes, those movies are awesome! I still want my food hydrator or whatever it was called.

Audi r8 had/still has all led headlights for a little extra (I think it was 15k extra)
So are all the loads in that bike transferred throughout the engine then? Or is there a large section spaceframe that is held with fasteners?
If everything is going through the engine, than that is goin to be fucking awesome

So they are using the engine as a stressed member huh? Wow.... awesome stuff. I'd be scared shitless to ride one though. Bikes are "underbuilt" enough as it is already. A friend of mine from when I used to race used to have this joke about bikes, said he'll only start riding when they finish building bikes properly.... still missing two wheels and a roof. lol.

Wonder how much weight savings this will give and what's the stiffness compared to a traditional frame bike (especially w/ CF cost getting lower these days)....

LEDs are sort of a decoration. They look cool, but they will probably turn into a fad. It's like putting those fake wood panels on the sides of station wagons- we will look back at it in the future and say LOL what were we thinking?

I believe the air box is going to be the frame similar to the Desmosedici which has a CF air box and supports the steering head. I'm assuming the 1199 is going to be made of magnesium since they are already using magnesium on the valve cover, fairing stay and engine case covers.

btw, Matador, you can tell your buddy he can start riding now... Smart with a Hayabusa motor counts! 2 wheels 1 roof, 2 girls 1 cup... same shit get it!

15K for a headlight upgrade! That's retarded!

You think? If an LED headlight can offer more candlelight power than a halogen, weigh 50% less and run twice as long, I don't see how it can be a fad!?!

I think I had that discussion about using the LED headlight a while back ago. The technology is there and I think car manufacturers are testing the idea. So I think this will happen sooner, maybe by 2015?

I think Xenon is more of a fad than anything. I really hope they utalize it sooner.

Audi R8 was first production car with full LED headlights. Now have come some others: Audi A8, Audi A7, Audi A6 (new), BMW 6 Series (new), Mercedes CLS (new) and more to come fom these brands. Now I don't know what about the others.

By the way, love Ducati's and MV Augusta's. Also like the latest BMW S1000 RR.
