rustproofing
It is worth spraying the underbody and steel parts with rustproofing? I live in a road salt area. Does the BRZ have underbody panels that hide the bodywork?

FWIW my FRS that I am trading in is 8 years old, winter driven the entire time.
There are a couple of spots where I am starting to see some rust form but you have to look closely to find them. I will not be rustproofing my BRZ. |

They come with 5 year rust warranty and some sort of rust protection. I wouldnt do the crazy underspray stuff.

The jack points are probably the worst. I didn't use pucks and they got a little bit folded so there's some rust there, but nothing terrible.
On the subframe and other under car pieces the worst is probably the nuts/bolts since they aren't painted. You can see some rust spots on the painted metal pieces but nothing out of the ordinary for a winter driven car in a heavy salt environment. Also worth noting is that the first gen FRS did not have all the underbody panels that the current ones do from the factory and in addition to being winter driven I've been fortunate enough to have commuted through probably a half doesn't significant construction zones over the life of the car. |

I spray under my cars with this when I do the fall oil change/winter wheel swap. Takes an extra 10 minutes and offers piece of mind. I've noticed less rust on subframe/bolts etc since I've been doing it.

I use this
CRC Heavy Duty Marine Corrosion Inhibitor
https://www.partsvu.com/77-06026-cor...SABEgLVXPD_BwE It's great stuff not only for bodywork, but I spray all bolts, brake bleeders, flare joints, steel suspension parts, basically anything that might need disassembly on the future. It leaves a soft waxy film. It's like a foggy spray that can get into cavities. Four 10 ounce spray cans will do a BRZ or small pickup. It's very similar to a British rustproofing product called Waxoyl. |

I did a bit of surface rust correction after 4 years or so. Steel wool brush, naval jelly, primer, black paint.
-Edges of the front subframe -Pinch welds on the frame -Little gusset thing in the rear wheel well Most of the underbody has plastic or fiberglass covers. |

Would this apply to people living in the LA/SF Bay Area? I'm not sure what counts as "coastal" enough to be problematic for rust...

The 1st gen at least have pretty horrible rust proofing from the factory, it shocked me when i first had a look under my car. Im used to Renault though which are among the best in the market for rust protections, and my daily looked like new compared to the Gt86, even with twice the mileage. Used a spray on rust protection oil this winter which is my first with the 86 on all thee suspension, subframes etc to slow the process down.

I spray LPS3 on underside before every winter and it keeps the cars nice and clean.
