Corner entry ability

How is the corner entry ability of the FR-S or BRZ? (I haven't driven one yet) This includes braking and the initial turn-in through a corner w/o understeer. You can somewhat say that it's the car's ability to evade accidents, which I think is very important

Also, which cars in the affordable price range have better corner entry? Miata? MR2 Spyder?

Haven't been to a track with it yet, but with the videos I've seen it seems like you can enter a corner MUCH faster in the FR-S then other cars. The corners is the only place you can feasibly pass high HP cars.

Though as far as defensive driving is concerned, I have had one instance where the FR-S made it really easy to dodge an SUV that didn't look before turning into my lane. Though getting out of accidents is less about the car and more about your reflexes. Unless your steering wheel magically stops working before you hit someone, any car can make the slight adjustments to avoid an accident.

this car is being praised for it's incredibly intuitive handling and overall chassis neutrality from everyone; owners, professional journalists, and racers alike. I don't have mine yet (nor would I have the breadth of experience with cars to make this statement myself) but the handling and response is apparently world class.

It bites the road , the grip is always there . I have driven Nissan GTR's , zo6's , Porsche's and the only thing frs lacks is power but drive just as amazing as those cars

i keep reading post from people saying that the car likes to kick its tail out a lot. im not sure if they have sport mode on or if they are just use to FWD. I hope the BRZ/FRS handles better than the car i have now that has 200hp RWD and not balanced or made to handle whatsoever. I can take wide 90 degree turns at about 35mph without any trouble. im sure the twins can take it much faster than this, but im not gonna be dumb enough to find out myself.

In my brief experience with and FRS at an AutoX, I found that braking was excellent, with a nice, firm pedal and one hell of a bite (That car had TRD Pads, apparently). The turn-in is very quick and because the car stays flat, there is a very planted feel when turning hard. I didn't drive the car hard enough to really find its limits, but neutrality was a word that kept coming up throughout the course. The car never felt like it was understeering, and only once did I manage to get the ass out (in VSC Sport) and it was easy to correct. I'm sure with the aids off, it will be very drift-happy, and definitely far from understeer.


I'm sure someone with more AutoX experience could give you more detail on the cars handling dynamics.

On the stock tires Ive kicked the ass out twice unintentionally. Once was in the rain. I always have traction/vsa off unless the rain is really bad, in which case its in sport mode.

With better rubber, I can only kick the back out in the wet if I really try.

This car does exactly what you would expect. You accelerate into a corner and shift lock, of course the back end with nudge out, but it is entirely manageable. I have yet to see the back end kick out and I was worried when the trac control and VSC was on. Toyota knows what they are doing in the trac control department, we took this thing out and tried to get it to do first gear donuts with trac on and it will not break. Don't be stupid and rev match for shifts and you shouldn't see any issues.

have you ever gotten it to kick out with all the nannies on? i drive like a grandma in the rain, so im not too concerned with rain driving.

i'm not sure exactly what you're asking, but ALL cars will understeer if carrying too much speed into a corner. some cars will have higher limits than others, so short of quantification, you will need to specify a car in comparison with in order to have an idea of how well the frs handles corner entries.

If you're going for pure cornering ability you will need wider wheels and stickier tires. I was driving some aggressively on some curvy rodes when a BMW 135i showed up and we starting chasing each other. I found that I could definitely keep up in terms of power and handling. However, I found my tires were reaching their limit far before the car was in the corners. With stickier rubber, this car will be a monster in the mountains.

1. Ditch the Michelin's. They are silly unless you just want to go sideways and waste $240 tires. Ouch

2. Add some front camber. It seems even -1* would be ideal. Under high G's in faster cornering the front outside tire is the first thing to feel suspect to fail.

The rear is actually not too bad. Someone who wants to go faster for cheap could get the Eibach pro-kit and some front camber adjusters.
