Pulled the trigger

So I just picked up a 2015 FRS for some track duty this year. I’m super stoked about it as it’s my first time running on the track with 4 wheels as opposed to 2. This car definitely had a bit of a rough life, I bought it from a mom and pop dealer and looks like a former drift car form the bash bar hidden behind the front bumper skin and the 240 references in stickers all over it. I had the car checked out by my local tuning shop and largely speaking it’s good to go so I’m hoping for the best.

So I’m trying to keep things as close to stock as I can but the tires are shot. This largely speaking will be a dedicated track car, I may run it up to the grocery store every now and then but I work from home and I have a DD already. That being said, from the other thread, it seems like RE71 or the 660 are good choices but the size is the next question. I have the stock 17x7 and I don’t plan on changing rims any time soon so should I go 215 or 225?

Sounds like this is a just for fun and driver's education track car?

I would stick with 215 for the stock wheels and I would skip the RE71R tires for your case.

215. Both of those run wide. You could run 205.

For some cheaper tires look at GT Radials SX2's. Good little tires

Absolutely right RCE, I’ve done my time as a club racer, this is only a HPDE\Trackday car. No interest in competition. Thinking about it... In the interest of saving money on tires in the short term, three different tires are drawing my attention... maybe a forth since the post about the GT Radial SX2.

-Firehawk Indy 500 I have these on my hellcat as ‘summer’ tires and while I can’t attest to handling because its well... a hellcat and those don’t handle, the traction seems good in a straight line.
-Conti ECS Had those on my Camaro and I loved those all around but they’re a little pricier
-Falken FK510 no experience at all on this one. The closest experience I have are the Falken Wildpeaks I had on my Tundra
-GT Radial SX2 I haven’t heard or tried but it doesn’t mean they’re bad.

Thoughts?

Oh and I’ll be sticking with the 215/45 until I bite the bullet and get some wider wheels

Of those the GT Radials will be far and away the best on the track. Those Falkens aren't great. The Firehawks are a decent street tire.

For a car you're not worried about daily driving, you can go a little more aggressive...but it's helpful when they last and can take some heat. There's a couple other active threads in this forum on tire choice.

Here's one:

Yeah I saw that one and I’m definitely following a long a good bit. Just thinking as a starter with rare street miles and I want grip... but I also want to last as long as I can while I’m learning... Don’t want the nice tire to cover up bad driving... blah blah blah.

I appreciate the help everyone... This is definitely an awesome forum.
