Question about low mount oil cooler
Hi All!
I just bought an oil cooler that mounts to the bottom of the front fascia and another ft86 owner mentioned that it would be a good idea to mount it higher up like underneath the bumper crash beam due to a higher chance of it ripping off in a track accident. So my question is has anyone actually seen an oil cooler get destroyed by going slightly off track due to it being mounted on the lower front fascia or is this just an irrational fear? Thanks! |

I've never seen it happen, just it mentioned as a possibility. I have had a few high speed off tracks and never damaged a cooler so I don't think it is too much of a concern. I do plan on mounting it to the crash beam in the future so it is hit with cleaner air. Mounting to the lower fascia it is a little masked by the lower part of the bumper.

Pretty much all the oil cooler failures I've heard of was rocks or debris punching a hole in it and losing oil.

Does anyone know if there are any negative affects from mounting an oil cooler “upside down” with the nozzles facing down? This is the way I see it mounted to the crash beam but I’ve read negative things on other car forums.

For our application I don't see it being an issue as the sandwich plate is so high. The issues I have seen are all configurations where the cooler is higher then the feed/return line positions so it can drain back into the pan when the engine is shutoff, or cause a brief low oil pressure situation while the engine tries to fill it back up on startup.

Do you know if it’s ok that I rotate my oil cooler 180 degrees, so the back of the cooler is the new front? |

As far as I can tell they are non directional. I have a setrab 613 core. I don't think orientation matters too much.
