should you use a carbon cleaner when changing the oil
hey guys
my mechanic said i should do a carbon cleaner on my 2013 86 when we do the oil change. ive only had the car for 8 months so i don't know if the previous owner has done this. i generally use caltex 98 octane, which claims to have engine cleaners in the fuel. i have seen people say you shouldn't use carbon cleaners, that they can damage the engine. what are your thoughts on using a carbon cleaner on the 86 engine? thanks, rob. |

I don't think it would be necessary.

The engines use a direct and port injection system. This keeps the valves pretty much carbon free.
Using it won't hurt anything but won't do any good either. I would not bother.

i don't bother with intake cleaning methods unless i've got oddball vibration/running issues, and have already exhausted the typical replacement parts (plugs/wires, injectors, belts, coil packs)
