Steel wheels for winters on PP/TRD handling package with brembos
Hey everyone. New here, waiting for local dealers to get some 2020 86's in stock and am looking to buy one with the TRD handling package. Snow is starting to fall up here in Canada and I likely would need to get a set of winters on it right away. However I realized i haven't considered the brake clearance for the wheels.
How accurate are the 1010tires/tire rack selections when you choose the brz pp/toyota trd with 18" option when doing wheel searches? Do these guides consider the brake clearance? Tried to do a search on here but most of the wheel guides are for nicer summer wheels rather than cheap winter wheels. On 1010tires these steelies popped up in search when I put in the 18" trd trim option https://www.1010tires.com/Wheels/Win...hicleid=193988 any idea if these guys will clear the brembos? The reason I ask is they also have a 16" steel wheel option available (https://www.1010tires.com/Wheels/Win...hicleid=193988) for the trd 18" option so has me wondering how reliable the site's search is. |

17's clear Brembos, and that offset pushes them out 4mil from stock. So I would give it a shot. The 6.5 width is going to make tire shopping difficult. 205/50 is a taller tire, but shouldnt be an issue.
Worst case, you sell them to someone who wants to go slideways.

anyone on here use steel wheels for their winters? want to get nokian r3's but those aren't available for the set of steels i linked above. Was wondering if there are other narrower steel wheels that still clear the brakes

I'd check PP brake clearance thread. I guess, for listed sizes, narrower the better (for winter use). For example from ones there enkei pf01 17x7.5 ET+45 or vision cross 17x7.5 +40. Imho wider then that will be too much of a stretch for eg. 205 wide winter tires, but wider then that tires on car as light .. i wouldn't like to run in country with actual snow & ice in winter.
Winter wheel choice for "normal" brakes of twins is much simpler, many 16" clear (and even few rare 15" do). |

I put the Vision Cross 17x7.5 +40 wheels on my 2017 BRZ PP last week with Bridgestone Blizzak WS90 tires, so I can verify they do indeed fit. At less than $100 each, they're not much more than steelies and look at lot better. Very happy with the setup after our first real snowfall here in Iowa. We'll see if Bridgestone did truly increase the wear life over the WS80s.

You could mount winters on your stock PP rims and get something else for your summer tires.
I was lucky enough to find a used set of black PP rims which I'm using for winter. I'll keep my stock grey PP rims for the summer. My only qualm is that 215/45R17 on a 17x7.5 rim offers no rim protection. I might go 225/45R17 when these old Michelin Xi3's wear out. |
