Diagnostics tools for DIY

I have a 2013 frs with roughly 60k on the clock. I'm starting to venture in to the world of preventative maintenance. I have purchased the service manual and reading through it stumbled on the mention of an SSM3 to use for diagnostics. I understand its a tool dealers use to diagnose and trouble shoot problems.

The questions are as follows.
  • Is it possible to acquire this tool.
  • How much does it cost, I imagine its expensive.
  • What have people used as alternative.
  • Has any one used the OBD2 how far will this go to replace the SSM3
  • What other workarounds exist.

As one example the procedure for testing the ignition timing (among others), requires this tool.

Just get an oft. It tells you all that info.

Don't get an oft, wth. $400-500 for oft. You can get an obd2 dongle from Amazon for $5-50 (mine was 20), then buy obd fusion or torque on your phone. It's has more info than you'll need and can read and diagnose stuff. Get an oft if you need a basic ots tune and the diag stuff, but not for diag stuff alone.

I use my obd2 to do logs, read codes, clear codes, run guages for my boosted brz (oils Temps and tune info (afr, etc)).

In 4 years I've never needed more than the obd2 to solve the few issues I've had with the car.

You can do more than the above with obd2 iirc, but that's all I've used it for.
