Overfilling oil cause a knock?
Hello everyone. New member here, also a first time owner.
I need a bit of advice from the experts about an issue. Assuming that overfilled oil can cause the crank to splash it, causing airation or foaming up. The oil pump could not pump it properly causing the knock? Thanks in advance! Last edited by Yfzr750; 10-05-2019 at 02:10 PM. |

I've got 5.4-5.7qts written on my fill cap. I believe the 4.8 number is without changing the filter and the capacity it holds.
Edit: Re-reading, you said liters. Even 4 liters would be dripping out the fill cap, and oozing out of every opening-the motor would have been locked up as well. I'm assuming you meant quarts?

It can cause knocking sounds for sure. it will cause excessive bearing and rod wear. That was probably what caused the problem, unless they were adding oil to see if it silenced the knocking.

I accidentally overfilled my oil recently, but just got a vampire pump and drained a little from the dipstick tube.

Loose rod bearings knock at startup because the clearance is greater than the residual film can handle.
The heads collect an unusually large quantity of oil when running and it takes a few minutes for that last half liter to drain. There's a hit to fuel efficiency but I don't think an extra liter is a deal breaker. I'm ready to be called out on that - pure speculation. Read up on all the recall info for the valve springs and consider the horror stories as you rebuild. Be careful with the FIPS. I also recommend disassembling and cleaning the AVCS phasors. The retaining clip for the spool valve can be removed using a jeweler's screwdriver in conjunction with an improvised hook to pull outward. The rest of it is pretty straightforward flat-four stuff. Good luck! See link to unofficial service manuals in my sig. Not my content but super handy.

![]() Yep, collectively we are experts. I agree with @Ultramaroon, I doubt that under normal driving that over filling the crankcase by a liter (or quart) of oil caused any engine problems. Now, disassembling he engine isn't the difficult part, putting it back together correctly, takes some paying attention to. Before you rip the engine apart, you may consider changing the oil and filter, running it for a spell and see if it's still acting up - ![]() humfrz |

Is there any tricky things that I should be careful for or mark when removing?
I'll have a look about anything regarding the FIPS and AVCS systems Thanks everyone! Last edited by Yfzr750; 10-05-2019 at 02:12 PM. |

I always get the mobile1 full synthetic 5 quart jug. Change out the oil filter. Never had any problems.
Yes. Too much or too little oil can kill your engine if you don’t get it adjusted right away. |

Hi everyone.
I have searched and checked the manuals but couldn't find anything how to disassemble and clean the AVCS gears. As I'm sure some debris got in there. Is there any guides on how to do it? Don't want to start and have things fall out and I down know how to put it together again. Thanks in advance! Last edited by Yfzr750; 10-05-2019 at 02:13 PM. |

Sounds like someone may have put an oil additive or added heavier weight oil to it to quiet it down.
