Firestone Indy 500 vs Michelin Pilot A/S 3? - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

Hello,

In need of new summer tires. Only daily my 86 with spirited back country driving. I have been running Michelin Pilot A/S 3 the last 3 years and they're finally done. Great tires but i'm wondering if I could get a bit more grip from a dedicated summer tire. Friend suggested I get Firestone Indy 500 for a "true" summer tire.

Any recommendations for which one would be better? A/S 3's lasted me a good 40,000km-sh of driving. Do the Indy 500's last that long??

Not a chance. They lasted me 20k on the rear. I've never had a performance summer tire last 40k, but all seasons can. One thing I don't like about the firestones, and I do think they are a great tire for the money, is their wet braking performance. Wet stopping distances are noticeably longer than something like a hankook v12, while otherwise they feel pretty close.

The Pilot Sport 4S has a 30k mile warranty, if you liked the Michelin's, why not step up to their dedicated summer tire?

Conti extreme contacts have 30k mile warranty too and probably cost less than the michelins...but just a little more than the 500s

My vote is Firestone. I have been driving them now for a bit and really like them. Got mine for under 400$ for the 4 after rebate.

they're rated highest in their category, but i honestly just don't like the indy 500 branding tie-in, so i'd find something else simply because of that... but i'm odd.

The 500s are a rebadged Bridgestone Potenza RE003. I had a set on my last wheels. Very hard to beat for the money. Wet weather traction was eh ok. Currently on Toyo T1Rs because they were on clearance 4 for $360 and the 500s were on back order.

I’m currently on the 500’s and love them, really grippy for the price. I do agree on the weather having an affect on the braking but if you don’t drive stupid during that you’ll be fine!

Im on Indy 500s as well and love them. They are great tire and great grip for the money these are hard to beat.

I've been on MPSSs, but picked the Firestone 500s, in large part because of the favorable noise rating. The Michelins are super but I didn't think they were worth almost twice the price.

Yeah, I had a set of MPSS that lasted 8k miles(2 years) and I was past the wear bars sliding everywhere.
The Indy 500s I have on now look like they will outlast the MPSS by multiple times over though.
I'm almost 2 years in on them and about the same 8k miles the MPSS had and the Indy 500 have plenty of life.
They are definitely a steal for half the price and no more sliding and more sticking now.
