Fender widening

So I've seen some people cutting their fenders and welding them to the side of the cut fender and a lot of people are doing this on e36s and older cars, but never on a ft86. I was wondering if this is possible to do on this platform, because it's cheaper and looks better than a widebody.

Completely doable.

The big problem is that front bumper ending very high up.

Cheaper you say? Easy you say?
Same cost and labor if not more than a body kit.
Just the same shit with a different smell that's all.

Cost/ease is relative based on skill.
I know people who do this themselves.

If OP has the skills needed to do this himself, yes.
If not, better off buying a kit.

I looked into this quite a bit as I just changed wheels and need small flares,, and RB stuff is way too wide.

Check out N-style Customs on Facebook,,, they do lots of steel flares. The biggest issue as mentioned earlier is the bumpers and how those are dealt with. I figured if I did steel flares I's end up having to make extensions in fiberglass to extend over the bumpers. Ends up being lots of work with all of the body work, fiberglass work and you now have to paint/blend fenders.

BTW the red car above has N-Style fiberglass flares on it. They are nice but around $850 shipped if I remember correctly.

I ordered and have received ABW flares from the UK. Price with shipping and exchange right at $450. I haven't mounted them yet but fitment looks pretty good. Wheels are 18x10 +10 with 285/30 tires. I was afraid they wouldn't be wide enough but I think I'll be OK. The plan is to just paint them with no blending on the fenders. We'll see how they end up matching

As a sidebar,,, earlier I bought some universal 'ZG' style flares off ebay out of the Ukraine for $100. You certainly could make them work,, but it's a lot more work as compared to the AWB flares

Also check out SSWORXS.COM,,, they make metal flares

This was about the only way to do it back in the 70s and I have actually assisted a couple of times. It is not easy! In fact it is very very difficult even for a skilled welder. Bondo will be your friend throughout the project.
I have no clue why anybody would do this now that there are inexpensive kits around. Hell, even a cheapass import knock off of a copy of a fake would be easier to install and make look good than tryng to weld on the light alloy that these cars have for a body.

Like the sign on my toolbox says...just replace "restore 'em" to "bolt on".

If you have the body work skills, it can be done, and look really trick.
