side skirts area is bumpy. normal?

Is this normal? Down by where side skirts would usually be, the paint is bumpy, almost like severe orange peel. It feels like it wraps around underneath the body, and it does look intentional (it is on both sides all the way across the length of the car in a straight line), but I've never seen anyone mention it before.

It is the cars rust proof undercoating. You wouldn't normally notice it on most cars that have side rails installed.

It's actually a coating to prevent rock chips. Not necessarily a rust preventative and is not part of the undercoating process.
In the automotive coatings industry, its generally referred to as "Gravel Guard."

yea, to help from rock chipping. You see it on SUVs a lot.

At our shop, we buy different types, varying in how smooth or rough, and spray it on cars that have it originally or on cars that customer request. Then we paint over it...

That is normal... like CircuitJerk said, it's to prevent rock chips on the rocker panels. If it was nice, flat, and shiny, you'd cry because it'd be all chipped and ugly looking after a few years because of the amount of gravel, dirt, etc sprays up there so often.

Sorry for bumping a dead thread, but I have a question about it. Anyone notice it's soft compared to say the rest of the car? I noticed this, cause some gum got kicked up on the side of the car and while I was removing it from this part on the bottom of the car, I noticed it being soft, almost to the point that I was able to remove it with my finger nail.

That is so it will take the gravel impacts and not chip like a hard surface would.

It's not supposed to come off easily is it? Unless I was just taking off the excess since it seems to hang down a little bit. Think of an icicle, but on a much smaller basis. Or it could've been more gum, since the gum was white and so is my car. But I'm pretty sure the gum turned grey/black.
